It’s Women’s Health Week from 7–11 September.

This year’s theme is “Do it anyway”.

At first glance, that could sound a little dismissive. Women are already highly engaged in their health, using health services – including preventive health care – at greater rates than men, while often facing additional barriers to accessing the care they need.

But “Do it anyway” isn’t about telling women to try harder.

It’s about challenging the messages women hear – and can sometimes come to believe themselves – that you can’t do something, it’s too hard, or that your own health and wellbeing should come after everything else.

Women’s Health Week is led in Australia by Jean Hailes for Women’s Health. This year, they’re inviting every woman to back herself and “do it anyway” – whatever that looks like for you, in your life and on your terms.

Last week, many of us would have seen our cities and towns brightened by the lovely yellow of Daffodil Day, now in its 40th year of raising awareness and funds for lifesaving cancer research. Daffodil Day, Red Nose Day and Jeans for Genes Day are some of Australia’s longest-running and best-known modern charity awareness days. They helped make the combination of fundraising, public participation and cause awareness a familiar part of the Australian calendar, with many new ‘days of’ joining the roster. Which of these days are significant to you?

With around two in five Australians expected to be diagnosed with cancer by age 85, most of us will be affected by cancer - personally or through someone we know. Today is Daffodil Day, with all those beautiful daffodils representing hope for a cancer free future. We'd love to see your photos of your daffs in the comments below.

🦷 Oral health is health.

This Dental Health Week, the Australian Dental Association is encouraging young adults aged 18–25 to get “back to the dentist” and make their oral health a priority.

Regular dental care can help prevent problems and identify concerns early. But we also know that cost, availability, distance and previous experiences can make dental care difficult to access.

If it has been a while since your last dental visit, this week could be a useful prompt to explore the care available to you.
