Ever felt a sharp, shooting pain travel from your lower back down through your leg? That's often sciatica β€” and it's one of the most common reasons people across Kenmore, Chapel Hill, Indooroopilly and the wider western suburbs come to see us.

Sciatica isn't a condition on its own β€” it's a symptom, usually caused by irritation or compression somewhere along the sciatic nerve. It can show up as pain, tingling, numbness, or that familiar "pins and needles" feeling anywhere from the lower back through to the foot.

At Queensland Osteopathic Clinic, we start with a thorough assessment to understand what's actually driving your symptoms, rather than guessing. From there, our Osteopathic approach combines hands-on treatment with tailored movement advice to support your body as it manages and adapts.

If that niggling leg pain has been hanging around, it's worth getting it properly looked at.

⚑ Is It Really Sciatica?

Many people use the word "sciatica" to describe pain that travels from the lower back into the buttock or down the leg. However, sciatica is actually a description of symptoms rather than a diagnosis itself.

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. When it becomes irritated, people may experience:
β€’ Pain travelling into the buttock or leg
β€’ Tingling or pins and needles
β€’ Numbness
β€’ Burning or shooting pain
β€’ Muscle weakness in some cases

Sciatic symptoms can have a number of different causes. These may include irritation of the nerve where it leaves the spine, changes involving the lumbar discs, narrowing around the nerve, or less commonly irritation as the nerve passes through the buttock.

Because there are several possible causes, it's important not to assume that all leg pain is "just sciatica".

At Queensland Osteopathic Clinic, Osteopaths assess your lower back, pelvis, hips, muscles and nerve function to better understand what may be contributing to your symptoms. Treatment may include gentle hands-on osteopathic techniques, movement advice, stretching and rehabilitation exercises tailored to your individual presentation.

🚢 Early assessment can help identify what structures may be contributing to your symptoms and guide appropriate management.

πŸ’ͺ Shoulder Pain: More Than Just a Sore Shoulder

The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, allowing us to reach, lift, throw and carry. Because it moves so much, it's also one of the joints most likely to become irritated or painful.

Shoulder pain can develop gradually over time or come on after a fall, sporting activity or lifting something awkwardly. Sometimes the source of the pain is the shoulder itself, while in other cases it may be influenced by the neck, upper back or surrounding muscles.

Common symptoms include:
β€’ Pain reaching overhead
β€’ Discomfort when lifting or carrying
β€’ Pain sleeping on one side
β€’ Stiffness when reaching behind your back
β€’ Aching around the shoulder blade or upper arm

There isn't always a single cause. Muscles, tendons, bursae, joints and movement patterns can all contribute to shoulder pain.

At Queensland Osteopathic Clinic, Osteopaths assess how your shoulder works together with your neck, upper back and rib cage to better understand what may be contributing to your symptoms. Treatment may include gentle hands-on osteopathic techniques, mobility exercises, stretching and rehabilitation advice tailored to your individual needs.

🀸 Keeping the shoulder moving appropriately is often an important part of maintaining healthy function, but the right approach varies from person to person.

πŸ¦’ Is Neck Pain Becoming Part of Your Daily Routine?

Whether it's working at a computer, spending hours on your phone, driving, gardening or simply sleeping in an awkward position, neck pain can affect people of all ages and lifestyles.

The neck is made up of joints, muscles, ligaments, nerves and discs that all work together to support the weight of your head while allowing a remarkable range of movement. When one or more of these structures becomes irritated, everyday movements can become uncomfortable.

Neck pain may present as:
β€’ Stiffness turning your head
β€’ Pain when looking up or down
β€’ Tight shoulders and upper back
β€’ Headaches that begin at the base of the skull
β€’ Pain that travels into the shoulder or arm

It's important to remember that neck pain doesn't always indicate serious damage. Many factors can contribute, including posture, muscle tension, work habits, reduced movement, stress and previous injuries.

At Queensland Osteopathic Clinic, Osteopaths assess how your neck, upper back, shoulders and surrounding muscles move together. Treatment may include gentle hands-on osteopathic techniques, mobility exercises, stretching and advice to help improve movement and everyday function.

πŸ’» Small changes to your daily habits can sometimes make a big difference to how your neck feels over time.

πŸŒ„ Back Pain: It's More Common Than You Think

Most people will experience back pain at some stage of their lives. It can appear suddenly after lifting, gardening or sport, or gradually develop after long hours sitting at a desk, driving or working from home.

One of the biggest misconceptions about back pain is that it always means something is seriously damaged. In reality, back pain can involve muscles, joints, ligaments, discs, nerves and even lifestyle factors such as stress, sleep and physical activity levels.

Back pain may present as:
β€’ Stiffness when getting out of bed
β€’ Difficulty standing upright after sitting
β€’ Pain when bending or lifting
β€’ Aching across the lower back
β€’ Pain that travels into the buttock or leg

Because many structures can contribute to back pain, understanding the individual factors involved is often an important part of assessment.

At Queensland Osteopathic Clinic, Osteopaths assess how your spine, pelvis, muscles and movement patterns work together. Treatment may include hands-on osteopathic techniques, mobility work, stretching, movement advice and rehabilitation exercises tailored to the individual.

πŸƒ Movement is often an important part of keeping the back healthy, but everyone's situation is different and should be assessed individually.

🌿 Why do muscles become tight?

"Tight muscles" are one of the most common complaints we hear in clinic, but muscle tightness is often more complex than many people realise.

Muscles can feel tight for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it's due to prolonged sitting, repetitive work, exercise, stress, poor sleep, reduced movement, or because another area of the body is not moving as efficiently as it should.

Interestingly, a muscle that feels tight isn't always physically shortened. In some cases, it may be working harder than normal to support a joint or compensate for movement elsewhere.

Common areas where people notice muscle tightness include:
β€’ Neck and shoulders
β€’ Upper back
β€’ Lower back
β€’ Hips and glutes
β€’ Calves and hamstrings

Rather than focusing solely on stretching, it can be helpful to understand why the muscle is feeling tight in the first place.

At Queensland Osteopathic Clinic, Osteopaths assess how your muscles, joints and movement patterns work together. This helps us develop an individualised management plan aimed at improving movement, mobility and overall function.

πŸƒ Sometimes the key isn't simply stretching more β€” it's understanding what your body is trying to tell you.

πŸͺ΄ Is posture really the cause of your pain?

Many people have been told they need to "sit up straight" or "fix their posture" to prevent pain. The reality is often a little more complex.

There is no single perfect posture that works for everyone. In fact, many people with less-than-perfect posture have no pain at all, while others with excellent posture may still experience discomfort.

What often matters more is how long we stay in one position.

Whether you're sitting at a desk, driving, studying, working from home or looking down at a phone, spending hours in the same position can place increased stress on muscles, joints and surrounding tissues.

This may contribute to symptoms such as:
β€’ Neck pain
β€’ Mid-back tightness
β€’ Headaches
β€’ Shoulder discomfort
β€’ Lower back pain

Rather than chasing "perfect posture", a better approach is often improving movement, strength, flexibility and changing positions regularly throughout the day.

At Queensland Osteopathic Clinic, Osteopaths assess posture as part of a bigger picture. We look at how your joints, muscles, movement patterns and daily activities may be contributing to your symptoms and provide individualised management strategies.

🌱 Small changes in movement habits can sometimes make a big difference over time.
