Today’s topic in the Master Practitioner of Holistic Art Therapy was identity and how creative expression can support people in exploring the many layers of who they are.
Our main activity was an oil painting called “The Many Layers of Me” and This is what I created.
The pink centre represents my feminine side. The curves, the softness and, of course… pink, because I love that shade of pink.
The strong blue background represents the masculine qualities that have served me throughout my life. The strength to be assertive, bold, independent and take action when it was needed. Those qualities have carried me through many seasons. It also represents depth within me.
The flower at the top represents the many layers of my identity. The feminine and masculine. The introvert and the extrovert. The different versions of me that have emerged, disappeared and transformed over the years. Together, they tell the story of who I am.
I absolutely love how this piece turned out, and I loved seeing how differently everyone in class expressed themselves through this activity. It’s always a reminder that art has a beautiful way of revealing things we often can’t put into words.
