With 3% of Australian school-aged children suffering from daytime bladder control and 10% suffering from bedwetting, the Mars Clinic was established to meet the significant community need for the treatment of children with bladder and bowel conditions. MARS CLINIC
Your Partner in Children’s Continence

Are you dealing with a child or adolescent with bladder or bowel problems and don’t know whether

to seek help? Our specifically trained Physiotherapists use the latest technology and scientific research to provide a specific diagnosis and treatment plan. Is your school-age child:
•still wetting during the day
•still wetting the bed at night
•needing to go to the toilet many times a day
•soiling their underwear
•developing recurrent urinary tract infections? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we may be able to help. Most children, but not all, gain bladder and bowel control by 4 to 5 years of age. It is important that all children over 5 years, with daytime wetting or soiling issues, are seen by a Health Professional experienced with children’s continence. The Purpose of the Mars Clinic

You can’t treat the bladder without considering the bowel. Constipation or irregular bowel habits often impact bladder function, leading to leakage, urgency or urinary frequency. Our physiotherapists take a whole-system approach to toileting health, helping kids improve bowel regularity to support overall continence outcomes.

Bladder and bowel concerns can take a toll on a child’s emotional wellbeing. Embarrassment, anxiety and fear of judgement are common in children and teens managing accidents or urgency. At the Mars Clinic, we support not just the physical symptoms, but also help rebuild a child’s confidence with evidence-based care, empathy and practical strategies.

School bathrooms are often loud, busy or unpleasant, and many children avoid using them altogether. This can lead to bladder holding, constipation and even infections. If your child comes home bursting for the toilet, or complains of tummy aches or wetting during or after school, it might be time to investigate further. We help families work with schools and establish better routines so children can focus on learning, not their bladder.

A bladder diary is one of the most practical tools we use to understand what’s going on with your child’s continence. By recording fluid intake, toileting habits and accidents over a few days, we get insight into bladder capacity, holding behaviours and urgency patterns. This helps us tailor our treatment approach to meet your child’s specific needs and identify areas where simple changes can make a big difference.

Toileting problems are common but they do not always resolve on their own. We often hear parents say they hoped their child would grow out of it, but early intervention is usually more effective and less stressful. If something doesn’t feel right, a continence physiotherapist can help you understand what’s typical, what needs support, and how to make a plan forward.

Is It Really Just a UTI?

Recurrent urinary tract infections in children can sometimes be linked to how they are using their bladder. Poor posture on the toilet, not emptying properly, or pelvic floor dysfunction can all contribute to ongoing infections. A continence physiotherapist can help identify these issues, improve voiding patterns and reduce the risk of future infections.

Yes, kids have pelvic floors too. These muscles help control wee and poo, and when they’re not working properly, children might strain, leak, or have trouble fully emptying. Continence physiotherapists assess how these muscles are working and use age-appropriate strategies to help children gain better control. Early support can prevent frustration and accidents later on.

Bedwetting after age 6 is common, but it’s also something that can be addressed. It’s not your child’s fault, and there are many strategies that can help. At the Mars Clinic, our physiotherapists support families to improve night-time dryness using evidence-based approaches tailored to each child’s needs. We explain how the bladder and brain coordinate during sleep and how to encourage healthy patterns.

Children with ADHD, autism, or sensory processing differences often face additional challenges when it comes to toilet training and continence.
