🚨 BOOK WEEK PSA FOR PARENTS 🚨

Book Week is coming at the end of August and, in a completely unexpected turn of events, we have actually organised ourselves early this year. 😂🙌

We chose Wizz from Do Not Open This Book! and decided to have a go at making the costume ourselves. Hope Andy Lee is proud of us.

One giant cardboard box, some paint, a bit of cutting and sticking, and some very enthusiastic little helpers later… we have a Wizz! 💙📚

Is it perfect? Absolutely not.

Did the kids help make it? Yes.

Was there paint everywhere? Also yes. 😂

But I actually love that they were part of making it and it turned into a pretty fun afternoon together.

So consider this my community service announcement to all the other parents:

Book Week is the last week of August.

You still have time to choose the character, find the cardboard box hiding in the garage and convince yourself that “surely I can make that.” 😂✂️🎨

And if you have already organised your Book Week costume… I am genuinely impressed.

What is everyone going as this year? 👇

I’ll be taking a short break from 11–16 August to enjoy some family time at the beach, recharge and soak up a little sunshine! ☀️🌊🏖️

Regular appointments will resume on Monday, 17 August.

I’ll still be monitoring emails during this time, but responses may be a little delayed. Thank you for your understanding! 💛

One of the things we’ve been doing more of since starting Prep is playing with the sounds and parts inside words 📚

A simple skill that often gets overlooked is syllable awareness - hearing and recognising the beats or chunks in words.

You might have done this before without even realising it:
👏 foot-y
👏 Bris-bane
👏 gym-nas-tics

When children learn that words can be broken into smaller parts, they are building an important foundation for later reading and spelling skills.

The best part? It doesn’t need to feel like learning.

Some easy ways we practise at home:
💛 Clapping family names
💛 Clapping favourite sports and activities
💛 Clapping animal names
💛 Playing “how many claps?” with random objects around the house

My 5-year-old especially enjoys trying to find the longest words he can think of and seeing how many claps they have 😅
These little literacy moments only take a few seconds, but they all add up.

Can you think of a word with more claps than gymnastics?

🎈 International Day of Play 🎈

I have to admit, I didn’t even know International Day of Play existed until I saw our local OSHC sharing it this morning. As a speech pathologist, that felt a little ironic!

It was a great reminder of something we talk about all the time in speech pathology: play isn’t a break from learning. For children, play is learning.

Through play, children learn to:

🗣️ Communicate

👂 Listen and follow directions

🤝 Interact with others

💭 Solve problems

📖 Build stories and imagination

Whether they’re building a tower, digging in the sandpit, pretending to run a café, chasing bubbles, or creating an elaborate game with friends, they’re developing skills that support communication, literacy, social connection and learning.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is:

“They’re just playing.”

But when children are deeply engaged in play, their brains are working incredibly hard.

So today is a good reminder that play isn’t “just playing”.

It’s learning.
It’s communicating.
It’s connecting.
It’s growing.

💬 What is your child’s favourite way to play at the moment?

Lately at home, we’ve been doing lots of rhyming without even really meaning to, in the car, at bedtime, during silly conversations, and while reading books together.

Rhyming is actually an important early literacy skill because it helps children start noticing patterns in sounds and words. That sound awareness becomes an important foundation for reading later on.

The good news is it doesn’t need to feel like homework.

Some of our favourite easy rhyming moments:
📚 rhyming books
🚗 “What rhymes with…?” in the car
🤣 silly made-up rhymes
🎵 songs and nursery rhymes

And honestly… children usually find the nonsense words the funniest 😅

Literacy really does grow in little everyday moments.

What are your favourite rhyming books or games at home?

📚 National Simultaneous Storytime is happening this Wednesday!

Whether you’re joining in at home, at kindy, childcare or school, storytime can be much more than simply reading the words on the page.

You can build communication through small moments:
💭 Making predictions
🗣️ Talking about pictures
❤️ Sharing ideas
✨ Following your child’s interests

I’ve also found some great resources to help you get ready for Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller:
📖 Activity ideas from
🗣️ Aided Language Display and communication prompts with ideas before, during and after reading

Storytime does not need to look one particular way. Some children sit quietly, some move around, some point, some chat the whole way through and some use AAC. All participation counts 💙

🦘 Comment ROO below and I’ll send through the links!

Save this post for Wednesday.

Today is Childhood Apraxia of Speech Awareness Day 💙

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder that affects a child’s ability to plan and coordinate the movements needed for speech.

Many children with CAS know exactly what they want to say, but getting the words out can feel incredibly difficult and exhausting.

Awareness matters because these children are often working so much harder than people realise.

Shouting out the incredible advocacy and awareness work being done by professionals like Nia from , who continue to educate, support families and raise visibility for CAS within our community 💙

Every child deserves to feel heard, understood and supported.

Since starting Prep, we’ve been doing a lot more literacy at home 📚

Sounding out simple words, noticing letters in everyday places, and playing little games with sounds as part of our routine.

One thing I often share with families is that a common misconception about learning to read is that children need to know all their letter names first (A, B, C…).

While letter names are helpful, what often matters most in the beginning is learning the sounds letters make.

That’s because reading starts when children can hear and blend sounds together:
/s/ /a/ /t/ → sat

These little foundations, hearing sounds, playing with rhyme, listening for beginning sounds, all build toward confident reading later on 💛

Prep has been a lovely reminder that literacy doesn’t only happen at school. It happens in books before bed, on car rides, while spotting signs, and in playful little moments at home.

What literacy activities are your little ones enjoying at the moment?
