St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital is one of Australia's leading hospitals providing first class treatments and achieving world class results. St Andrew’s is a world leader in patient outcomes for many of our specialties. We achieve this by attracting the best staff and medical practitioners and carefully auditing and improving on the outcomes of our treatments. The hospital is ranked as one of Australia's top-performing hospitals by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS). In 2010 St Andrew's completed a major $76 million redevelopment launching the hospital into a new and exciting era. As a result the hospital now comprises state-of-the-art buildings, facilities and equipment including new theatres, intensive care ward, rehabilitation facilities and wards. A few facts about the hospital in 2010-2011:
• 23,385 patients admitted - 9,741 day patients and 13,644 in-patients
• 18,309 procedures performed - 12,708 theatre procedures, 2,480 endoscopic procedures and 3,121 catheter laboratory procedures
• 11,415 patients seen in the Emergency Centre and 3,021 admissions
• 1,338,022 minutes operating
• 705 tonnes of laundry
• 233,669 meals served
• 1.3 million staff hours worked. Through the work of our staff and doctors and in collaboration with St Andrew’s Medical Institute we have, and will continue to evaluate, benchmark and improve what we do to enhance the quality of our patient’s lives. St Andrew’s demonstrates results that are statistically among the best in the world and consistently measure and exceed US, European and Australian benchmarks for patient outcomes. From Brisbane to Kiribati: Supporting orthopaedic care through outreach

St Andrew's healthcare professionals recently returned from Kiribati, where they joined a team led by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Orthopaedic Outreach to provide orthopaedic care and education to the remote Pacific island nation.

The team included St Andrew's Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Michael Lutz, anaesthetist Dr Steven Cook, and orthopaedic nurse Sharon Kermeci, along with The Wesley Hospital Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr John Roe and representatives from other hospitals.

Working from Tungaru Central Hospital in Tarawa, the team provided outpatient clinics and surgical care for people living with a wide range of orthopaedic conditions, while also sharing knowledge and skills with local healthcare workers to help strengthen healthcare capacity within the community.

"The local staff and people of Kiribati welcomed us with incredible warmth and generosity," Sharon says. "Their resilience, resourcefulness and willingness to work together never ceased to amaze us. Despite the challenges they face, their commitment to caring for their communities is truly inspiring."

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our First Nations Career Open Day on Tuesday.

It was wonderful to welcome Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members to St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital to explore career opportunities, meet our team and learn more about working in healthcare. The day sparked great conversations, meaningful connections and plenty of interest in the many career pathways available across our hospital.

We're especially excited that the event has already led to potential job opportunities for some attendees, with many others exploring next steps in their healthcare careers.

Last year, more than 3,400 cardiac patients received treatment at St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital. Behind every admission, procedure and surgery is a person, a family and a team committed to achieving the best possible outcome.

From emergency cardiac care and advanced procedures to complex open-heart surgery, our dedicated cardiac specialists, nurses and support teams work together every day to provide expert care when it matters most.

In 2025, our teams:

💙 Treated more than 3,400 cardiac patients
💙 Performed more than 3,700 cardiac catheter laboratory procedures
💙 Completed 315 open-heart surgeries
💙 Undertook 168 TAVI procedures
💙 Aided more than 500 Emergency Centre cardiac presentations
💙 Supported patients from Brisbane and across regional Queensland

Building on a long history of cardiac innovation, including becoming the first International Centre of Excellence (Cardiac Catheter Lab Accreditation with PCI) in Australia, our teams continue to provide advanced heart care for patients from Brisbane and across Queensland.
