St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital

St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital First class treatment. World class results. St Andrew’s provides the best possible care and leadership in all spheres of activity of the hospital.

St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital is one of Australia's leading hospitals providing first class treatments and achieving world class results. We have earned a reputation as a first class hospital particularly for complex clinical procedures with one of the highest patient complexities in Australia. St Andrew’s is a world leader in patient outcomes for many of our specialties. We achieve this by at

tracting the best staff and medical practitioners and carefully auditing and improving on the outcomes of our treatments. The hospital is ranked as one of Australia's top-performing hospitals by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS). In 2010 St Andrew's completed a major $76 million redevelopment launching the hospital into a new and exciting era. As a result the hospital now comprises state-of-the-art buildings, facilities and equipment including new theatres, intensive care ward, rehabilitation facilities and wards. A few facts about the hospital in 2010-2011:
• 23,385 patients admitted - 9,741 day patients and 13,644 in-patients
• 18,309 procedures performed - 12,708 theatre procedures, 2,480 endoscopic procedures and 3,121 catheter laboratory procedures
• 11,415 patients seen in the Emergency Centre and 3,021 admissions
• 1,338,022 minutes operating
• 705 tonnes of laundry
• 233,669 meals served
• 1.3 million staff hours worked. Through the work of our staff and doctors and in collaboration with St Andrew’s Medical Institute we have, and will continue to evaluate, benchmark and improve what we do to enhance the quality of our patient’s lives. St Andrew’s demonstrates results that are statistically among the best in the world and consistently measure and exceed US, European and Australian benchmarks for patient outcomes. It is in this way we fulfill our own motivation to work in healthcare and our role as a Uniting Church organisation.

At St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital, our story begins with remembrance.

Established as a living memorial to the men and women of Australia’s armed forces of World Wars I and II, our hospital was created to honour their service through something deeply meaningful - care for others.

Every patient we support, every family we walk alongside, continues that legacy of compassion and service.

🎉 Celebrating 50 years of dedication! 🎉

This week, we proudly celebrated an extraordinary milestone as Operating Theatre team member Margaret Dowding marked 50 years of service at St Andrew's.

Since joining the hospital, Margaret has witnessed remarkable change, and through it all, her commitment, experience and care have helped shape the St Andrew's we know today.

Reflecting on her journey, Margaret shared: "Since starting my career at St Andrew's 50 years ago in 1976, I've seen a lot of change. We've gone from having five theatres to 14! The people are what's kept me here so long and I value the lasting friendships I have made and continue to make. St Andrew's really is a home away from home."

Thank you, Margaret, for five decades of service, dedication and friendship. Your contribution to St Andrew's and the countless patients, colleagues and clinicians you've supported over the years is truly remarkable.

💙 Congratulations on this incredible achievement.

✨ Thanks to the dedication of our incredible volunteers, the St Andrew's Emergency Centre waiting area has recently undergone a transformation.

The project was funded by the efforts of our talented virtual volunteers, who lovingly create handmade items for our annual Mother's Day Stall and Christmas Market. Their creativity and countless volunteer hours have helped create a space that feels more welcoming for everyone who walks through our doors.

The makeover includes:
🪑 Comfortable new lounges, chairs and coffee tables
🌿 Privacy screening for the storeroom area
💙 A stunning waterfall window feature, bringing a sense of tranquillity for patients and their families

A few final touches are still to come, but the difference is already being felt by patients, visitors and staff alike.

These photos feature Emergency Centre Nurse Unit Manager Mitzi, Head of Emergency Dr David Hannay, and some of the dedicated virtual volunteers whose fundraising efforts helped bring this project to life.

To our volunteer team, whether you're crafting, fundraising, giving your time or supporting us behind the scenes – thank you. ❤️
