Today is World Down Syndrome Day! 💙💛

World Down Syndrome Day is all about celebrating incredible individuals with Down syndrome, their strengths, personalities, and the joy they bring to our sessions every day. We’re proud to support, learn from, and advocate alongside our families. Keep rocking those socks and spreading inclusion!

The theme this year is calling on everyone around the world to stand
Together Against Loneliness. Everyone feels lonely sometimes. But for many people with Down Syndrome and other intellectual disabilities, loneliness is a more common and painful experience. Their families can feel lonely too and feel cut off from support.

The key to conquering loneliness is real inclusion! It’s about having good friendships and relationships. It’s the feeling of being valued and knowing you belong. Let's stand

Happy International Women's Day!

We are so proud of the wonderful women on our team, that we have the pleasure of meeting and knowing (the amazing mothers, carers, teachers, and more), and the amazing girls we have the privilege of supporting to grow and thrive.

International Women's Day 2026 is about balancing the scales to be fair, inclusive and accessible. Fair, inclusive and accessible environments and opportunities are deeply embedded in our values at OCC Therapy.

Our OT Melissa has recently participated in a Toileting webinar and has shared some of her top tips below!

Toilet training has always been something I’ve been interested in and became even more so when I had to toilet train my eldest son! I already knew the basics from being a Paeds OT, but I thought it would be great to do a PD course as a refresher, and I have listed here a few key takeaways!
🧻It is important to start with the bowel movements first when toilet training a toddler. This is for the primary reason that if the bowel is full, the bladder will be impacted.
🧻 Look for readiness signs, rather than age alone, when determining if your child is ready to be toilet trained. Some of these signs include:
✔️ Being able to stay dry for 1.5-2 hours
✔️ Having the physical skill to hold their bladder
✔️ Having the communication skills to understand the process and tell a caregiver when they need to use the toilet.
🧻 Consider how much capacity you currently have as a caregiver to take on toilet training. If you feel like your capacity is low, it may not be the time as toilet training can be challenging.

These facts assisted in my toilet training journey with my son and hopefully it can be helpful for you as well! For more info, check out the Verve OT Webinar "How to support toilet training goals in children" or get in touch with your therapist.
