Evidence Is More Than a Diagnosis

When applying for the NDIS, a diagnosis is important, but it may not explain the whole picture.

Evidence is most helpful when it shows how disability affects everyday life.

This may include information about communication, mobility, self-care, decision-making, emotional regulation, social participation, learning, behaviour, safety or daily routines.

A useful question to ask your treating professional is:

“Can this report explain how my disability impacts my daily life and what support I need?”

Clear, practical information can help others understand your support needs.

At Star Support Soulutions, we encourage participants and families to keep notes and ask questions throughout the process.

What Is an Access Request Form?

The Access Request Form is one way a person can apply for the NDIS.

The NDIA explains that the form gathers information about the person, their disability and their situation. It also notes that people usually start by connecting with an NDIS partner first, and do not always need to complete the form to apply.

If you are preparing to apply, it can help to gather:

Medical reports
Therapy reports
Functional assessments
Letters from treating professionals
Information about daily support needs
Evidence of age and residency

You do not need to have every answer straight away. Start with what you have and ask for guidance.

Community Access Can Start Small

Community access does not need to start with big outings.

Sometimes it starts with a short walk, a quiet coffee, a trip to the shops, a visit to the library or attending a familiar place with support.

For some participants, the goal may be confidence. For others, it may be social connection, independence, routine or trying something new.

There is no need to rush.

A calm support worker can help plan ahead, reduce stress and support the participant to feel safe while taking part in the community.

At Star Support Soulutions, we support community access in a way that respects each participant’s comfort level and goals.

A Simple Tip — Write Down What Works

One helpful participant tip is to keep a small note of what works well.

This may include:

What time of day support works best
Which routines feel calm
What communication style is preferred
What activities feel enjoyable
What situations feel stressful
What helps when things feel overwhelming

These notes can help support workers, providers, family members and support coordinators understand what good support looks like for you.

Support is not just about what needs to be done. It is also about how it is done.

When support is built around the person, daily life can feel more manageable.

Building Independence at Your Own Pace

Independence does not have to mean doing everything alone.

For many participants, independence means having the right support to make choices, try new skills and feel more confident in everyday life.

This may include learning to prepare meals, manage a routine, use public transport, attend appointments, communicate needs or take part in community activities.

Progress can be slow and steady. That is okay.

The most important thing is that support is respectful and works at the participant’s pace.

At Star Support Soulutions, we celebrate small wins because small wins often become important steps toward bigger goals.

NDIS Supports Should Connect to Your Needs and Goals

NDIS funding is there to help eligible participants access disability-related supports that connect to their needs, goals and plan.

NDIS supports can help with daily living activities, building independence and skills, assistive technology, equipment, home or vehicle modifications, and other approved disability-related supports. The NDIA explains that participants can only use funding for supports that are NDIS supports, related to their disability and in line with their plan.

A helpful habit is to ask:

“Does this support help me with my disability-related needs or goals?”

Understanding your plan can help you feel more confident when choosing services.

What Does Daily Living Support Mean?

Daily living support can mean different things for different people.

It may include help with routines, meal preparation, personal care, household tasks, appointments, shopping, community access or building everyday skills.

The goal is not to take over. The goal is to support the participant in a way that respects their choices, builds confidence and encourages independence where possible.

A good question to ask is:

“What would make today feel easier, safer or more manageable?”

At Star Support Soulutions, we understand that everyday tasks can sometimes feel overwhelming. Calm, reliable support can make a real difference to daily life.
