June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

Did you know bowel cancer is one of the most treatable cancers when detected early?

The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program is a simple and effective way to detect early signs of bowel cancer, often before symptoms develop. Early detection can make a significant difference and may save lives.

The good news is that free bowel cancer screening is now available to all Australians aged 45 to 74 years through the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.

Unfortunately, fewer than half of eligible Australians currently complete their bowel screening test. If participation increased to 60%, an estimated 84,000 lives could be saved by 2040.

If you're aged 45 or over and have received a bowel screening kit in the mail, don't put it aside. The test is free, simple to complete at home, and could be lifesaving.

As the temperature drops (and the rain falls), our immune systems face increased challenges from seasonal viruses and the physical toll of colder weather. To help you stay well, our team has compiled a few tips for the cooler months.

- The most effective defence against seasonal influenza is the flu vaccination.
- Focus on nutrient-dense foods that support natural defences – think fresh fruit and vegetables for Vitamin C.
- Hydration: It is easy to forget to drink water when it isn't hot, but staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining healthy mucous membranes, which act as a barrier against germs
- Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep. Sleep deprivation can significantly suppress immune function.
- Manage Stress: High cortisol levels from chronic stress can weaken the body's ability to fight off infections.
- Stay Active: While it’s tempting to hibernate, moderate exercise improves circulation and helps the immune system work more effectively.
- Hand Washing: Wash hands with soap and water for at least 30 seconds, especially after being in public spaces.

Isabel is one of our lovely Registered Nurses, bringing many years of RN experience to Sante Medical and Paddington Skin.

Her journey into healthcare began as a medical receptionist, inspiring her to study nursing at USC. Since then, she’s worked across general practice, integrative health, and occupational health—from Noosa to the Brisbane CBD.

Isabel is passionate about patient advocacy and delivering high-quality care, working closely with our doctors to support you and your family.

Outside of the clinic, she loves Pilates, beach days, good food, and a great book 📚
