“You handled it so well.”

It’s one of the things people say with the best intentions. And sometimes it lands okay.

But sometimes the honest response is something closer to… I don’t actually remember a lot of it. I just kept going. I don’t know if that counts as handling it.

For some people, gaps in memory - especially around difficult periods or experiences - can be the mind’s way of protecting itself. It’s a response that can make a lot of sense in context, even if it’s confusing or unsettling to live with.

If you’ve ever felt like you “should” remember more, or wondered why certain things feel blurry or far away - that’s worth being curious about, gently, and ideally with someone you trust.

You don’t have to have the whole story to know that something affected you.
