Speech Pathology Week | Different Forms of Communication

Communication is so much more than spoken words. It’s how we share our thoughts, feelings, needs, choices and ideas, and it can look different for everyone.

For some people, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) can support or provide an alternative to speech. AAC may include gestures, facial expressions, key word signs, writing, drawing, communication boards or speech-generating devices.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to communication. What matters is that every person has a way to express themselves, be understood and participate meaningfully in everyday life.

Our Speech Pathologists can support people with complex communication needs by exploring individualised AAC options and working alongside families and communication partners to create supportive, communication-friendly environments.

This Speech Pathology Week, we’re celebrating all forms of communication, because every person deserves the opportunity to have their voice heard.

Speech Pathology Week - Possibility to Grow 🌱

Today we’re celebrating the small wins that can lead to big growth.

Our Small Wins Wall is up in the clinic, inviting our team, clients and families to share something they’ve achieved recently because progress doesn’t always have to be huge to be meaningful.

From trying a new food, booking an appointment or passing an exam, to building confidence with communication, independence or everyday activities, every win deserves to be celebrated. 💛

If you’re visiting the clinic this week, add your own small win to our wall! We can’t wait to watch it fill up. 🌱

What’s one small win you’re proud of recently?

🌼 Daffodil Day at Brilliant Minds 🌼

Earlier this week, our clinic was filled with a little extra yellow as we came together to support Daffodil Day. 💛

We had daffodils available at the clinic in exchange for a donation, helping raise vital funds for cancer research and support services.

When Daffodil Day first took root in 1986, the five-year cancer survival rate was approximately 46%. Today, thanks in part to decades of research made possible through community fundraising, that figure has risen to 72%.

For 40 years, Daffodil Day has represented hope, hope for better treatments, better outcomes and a future where everyone diagnosed with cancer has the best possible chance of survival.

Although Daffodil Day has passed for another year, you can still donate and help support this important cause. Every contribution helps fund life-changing cancer research and brings us closer to a cancer-free future. 🌼

A big thank you to everyone in our clinic community who donated and helped us support Daffodil Day this year. 💛

Speech Pathology Week starts this Sunday! 💬✨

We’re so excited to celebrate our wonderful speechies and the wider Speech Pathology community with a week of fun activities, education and special posts here at the clinic.

This year’s theme, “Communication creates possibility,” celebrates the important role speech pathologists play in empowering people to communicate, connect and participate meaningfully throughout all stages of life.

Throughout the week, we’ll be exploring the daily themes of Connect, Learn, Grow, Belong and Choose, sharing a little more about the many ways speech pathology can create possibilities every day.

We can’t wait to bring you along for the week and, most importantly, celebrate our incredible speechies! 💛🗣️

Turn the drive home into a language-building opportunity!

Some of the best speech and language learning happens during everyday moments, like the car ride home.

Instead of asking, “What did you do today?” (which can be overwhelming!), try these simple conversation prompts:
☀️ Build stories together using feeling and thinking words.
🧠 Ask one memory question and one perspective question.
💭 Take turns sharing your favourite parts of the day.
🤫 Don’t be afraid of silence, children often need extra thinking time.

Small conversations every day help build vocabulary, storytelling, memory, perspective-taking, and confidence.

🎉💙 We did it! 💙🎉

A huge THANK YOU to our incredible team, clients, and community who got involved in National Pyjama Day 2026 and donated to such an important cause.

Our goal was $500… and together we raised $536 for The Pyjama Foundation! 🥳

Every child deserves the opportunity to feel safe, supported, and confident in their future. For many children in foster care, frequent moves and instability can make this incredibly difficult. Through The Pyjama Foundation, volunteer Pyjama Angels provide children with mentorship, encouragement, and a love of learning that can have a lifelong impact.

We are so grateful to everyone who wore their PJs, donated, or helped spread the word. Your generosity will help give more children the support they deserve.

We’re still accepting donations throughout this week, so if you’d still like to contribute, there’s still time to make a difference!

Thank you for helping us support brighter futures, one child at a time. 💙🧸

Today, compatible mobile devices across Australia will receive a test AusAlert emergency notification. The alert will override silent mode and play a loud siren for approximately 10 seconds.

For many people especially children, individuals with sensory sensitivities, anxiety, autism, dementia, or a history of trauma, unexpected loud sounds can be distressing. Taking a few moments to prepare yourself or your loved ones beforehand can make a big difference.

💙✨ National Pyjama Day is coming to BMP! ✨💙

On Friday 24th July, we will be putting on our favourite PJs and joining National Pyjama Day for the 4th year in a row!

Pyjama Day is a wonderful opportunity to wear your PJs wherever you are and help raise awareness and funds for children in foster care. 💙

Children in foster care can experience significant trauma, uncertainty and disruption. Funds raised through The Pyjama Foundation help provide children with positive relationships, educational support and confidence-building opportunities through their Love of Learning Program, offering one-on-one support with learning, life skills and personal growth.

We invite our BMP community, families and clients to join in the fun by wearing your PJs on Friday 24th July! 🛌✨ Clients attending appointments on the day are more than welcome to wear their pyjamas!

We’ll also have some yummy snacks available for purchase, with all donations going directly towards our fundraising goal of $500! 🎉
