Last week, we celebrated the finishing of our semester 2 social communication groups including Peers for teens group and the upcoming Christmas holidays ✨️

I'm grateful for these lovely ladies who have supported me in running various social communication groups this year 💛

As we reflected on the year of firsts, we shared our anticipation for how we can support our neurodiverse communities in the new year, so they can authentically communicate and ultimately build meaningful connections with others ✨️

✨️ We have just completed the first part of the Peers teen social communication group ✨️

We are so pleased with everyone's participation and wanted to share a bit about what teens and parent have learnt so far.

From having conversations to finding potential friends, teens have practiced using practical communication skills and parents have supported their teens to implement these skills in daily life.

We understand that attending weekly group is a big commitment so we will take a short break over the school holidays for some rest.

We hope to see everyone refreshed and ready for the second part of the group in term 4 ☀️

Following many weeks of preparation, I'm pleased to share the Semester 2 Peers for teens social skills group has officially started 😊

Each group is unique and I'm very excited to get to know this lovely group of teens as I facilitate the group over the next 12 weeks. My aim is to provide an inclusive space for teens to learn how to connect with peers so they can cultivate fulfilling friendships in their own authentic way.

This term I am grateful to have senior psychology students assist me in running the group. Here they are, doing an amazing job demonstrating communication skills for sharing a conversation in a role play.

So far teens have learned about trading information and sharing conversations which are foundational skills in forming friendships. They have begun completing homework tasks to help with consolidating knowledge and practice communication skills. Parents have attended weekly parent groups to learn about the same topics covered in the teen group. I have been impressed at the teen group's active participation and parent's involvement in supporting their teen.

I'm looking forward to spending the next 12 weeks discussing many more practical communication strategies with these awesome teens and their equally awesome parents ✨️

🌟 Last night, I had the pleasure of running a free online parent session about the UCLA PEERS® for Teens program, and group which I am proud to be a certified facilitator for.

We explored the development of the upcoming 12 week PEERS® inspired neuroaffirming social communication group that is being offered for term 3-4.

This group is designed to support neurodiverse kids by affirming their unique social experiences and providing a respectful, inclusive environment for building friendships. 💬

Thank you to everyone who joined and participated 💖

Loved reconnecting with the amazing QPRS speech pathology team today! I shared insights from my experience with the Talking Mats approach—a fantastic tool for empowering clients to express their thoughts and feelings on topics that matter to them ✨️

We explored creative ways to use Talking Mats with children and teens navigating challenges following brain injury, stroke, CP, and more. It was a meaningful discussion about amplifying young voices so they could effectively communicate their experiences and priorities through all stages of recovery.

Fun fact—I’ve worked with their outpatient team and co-facilitated Telehealth Peers for Adolescents in the past few yrs, so it was nice to visit again.

Grateful for this passionate and skilled team for their unwavering commitment to helping kids, teens, and families thrive through recovery and beyond ✨️
