A great hearing support group meeting in Toowong today. The group spent today starting to plan for 2027 with lots of great ideas being bandied about including: Auracast explanatories, smoke detector requirements in 2027 and how to connect them, video phone demonstrations, social outings, QPC hearing augmentation tours and more.

What a great turn out for our first Acoustic Neuroma Support Group today! We couldn't have been more pleased to meet all of the people who attended. And a huge shout out to for making us feel so welcome. What a great venue.

Living with acoustic neuroma can feel isolating. This group offers a chance to meet others who understand, share experiences, ask questions and exchange practical ideas for everyday life.

It’s support beyond the clinic, helping you feel heard, connected and less alone.

80 years of Better Hearing Australia. What an afternoon!

Thank you to everyone who joined our 80th birthday event, The Past, Present and Future of Hearing Loss Support, last Friday, co-hosted with The University of Queensland.

Our lived experience presenters, Jenny, Trevor and Judith, shared poignant stories and funny anecdotes that reminded us of the difference community support can make.

Our consulting audiologist, Ellen Mackenzie, highlighted the need for support “beyond the clinic”, a theme that resonated throughout the afternoon.

UQ’s Nerina Scarinci, Jasmine Foley and Piers Dawes showed how research can improve everyday communication and quality of life, and why people with lived experience must be partners in that work.

John Krajewski from Audeara explored how Auracast can broaden hearing access in public spaces and at home. Questions from the floor reflected strong interest in its potential and the challenges of rollout.

Our panel brought John together with Leanne Emerson, CEO of Audiology Australia, and Rhonda Locke, CEO of Deafness Forum Australia. They tackled questions about audiology registration, Foundational Supports and accessible technology. Many details remain unresolved, but the discussion helped sharpen BHA’s priorities.

Business Manager Casper Schougaard and Board Chair Brett Hooper bookended the afternoon, reflecting on how hearing support has changed over 80 years and where we go next.

Technology and systems have come a long way. Yet the need for practical help, independent information and connection remains. That is why BHA’s work continues.

Thank you to everyone who contributed questions, ideas and conversations. We hope you left with a new insight or perspective, and that these conversations lead to better support for Queenslanders with hearing loss.

We’ll have to do it again sometime!

A small but enthusiastic group at our audiologist's Older Women's Network Queensland Inc. presentation on hearing loss awareness at Capalaba, Thursday last week.

These presentations are always interesting as the audience members always raise a number of great questions, and last week was no exception.

While hearing loss can be frustrating, isolating and challenging, sometimes a little humour can help us feel connected. And sometimes... just sometimes... there's an extra silver lining to having hearing aids. :)

Living longer should also mean staying connected.
Today is the International Day of Older Persons, and this year’s theme asks us to rethink the systems that support longer lives.
Hearing has an important part to play.
Hearing loss becomes increasingly common as we age, and it can affect much more than conversations. It can influence social connection, independence, confidence and participation in everyday life. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports that around one in three Australians aged 65 and over experience complete or partial deafness as a long-term health condition.
But better ageing is not just about providing a hearing aid.
It is about making sure people can stay connected, understand their options, participate in their communities and access the support they need.
That means hearing care beyond the clinic: accessible services, communication support, hearing-friendly environments, good information and strong social connections.
On International Day of Older Persons, the question should not simply be how we help people live longer.
It should be how we help people stay connected to the lives they want to live.

Study suggests natural sounds help people feel more connected to places

A new study highlights the importance of healthy soundscapes and reinforces growing evidence that the acoustic environment influences wellbeing, quality of life and how people experience the world around them.

Natural sounds such as birdsong may do more than create a pleasant listening experience – they could also strengthen people's emotional connection to where they live, a study suggests.

Huey Lewis Opens Up About How Being ‘Basically Deaf’ Has Changed His Life: ‘Music Is Not Part of My Life Anymore’
Singer Huey Lewis is opening up the devastating effects that hearing loss has had on his life as a musician. The Huey Lewis and the News singer, 76, announced in 2021 that he’d been diagnosed with Ménière’s disease in the mid-1990s after having “vertigo attacks” for years.

Huey Lewis says hearing loss from Ménière’s disease left him unable to hear music, as he reflects on how it changed his life and career.
