Not all prenatals are created equal 👀

It can be so easy to grab the most popular prenatal, assume it has everything you need and call it a day - but there’s a little more to it than that.

When I’m looking at a prenatal, some of the key nutrients I consider are folate, iodine, iron and choline including the form they come in, not just whether they appear on the label.

And most importantly, your prenatal should suit you.

Your diet, blood results, health history, stage of pregnancy and individual requirements can all influence what you may need. Sometimes that also means certain nutrients are better supplemented separately rather than trying to find one prenatal that does absolutely everything.

So before you buy your next bottle, turn it around and actually read the label. 🤍

Save this post for the next time you’re comparing prenatals - or send it to someone who’s currently trying to conceive or pregnant.

Your body moisturiser might deserve a second look 👀🧴

We’re applying these products to our skin every single day, so I think it’s worth knowing what’s actually in them.

As a naturopath with sensitive skin, I like to look beyond the marketing and consider the ingredients, their purpose and whether there are alternatives that better suit my preferences.

Some ingredients may trigger irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive skin, while others, such as certain parabens, have shown potential hormone-related activity in laboratory research.

These are simply some of the swaps I’d personally consider when choosing an everyday moisturiser.

My girly wellness essentials 🎀✨

A little collection of things I genuinely use, love or think are worth making the swap for.

I’m definitely not about replacing everything in your home overnight or trying to live a perfectly “low-tox” life. For me, it’s more about making simple swaps where they make sense especially for the things we use, wear or sleep in every single day.

Think breathable cotton un**es, period products, natural-fibre PJs and bedding… mixed in with a few of my favourite beauty & wellness things because wellness can also just be things that make you feel good. 🤍

PART 2 🛒 What I’d add to your shopping cart if you’re low in these nutrients…

This time we’re looking at zinc, iodine, omega-3 & vitamin D - all nutrients I think about regularly in clinic, particularly when supporting hormones, thyroid function, fertility, immunity and overall health. 🤍

My approach will always be food first where possible. Small changes to what you’re already buying each week can make a big difference to your overall nutrient intake.

But remember if you have a confirmed deficiency, food alone may not always be enough to correct it. Your individual requirements, blood results, diet and health history all matter when deciding whether supplementation is appropriate.

And if you missed Part 1, head back to my previous post for iron, magnesium, B12 & folate.

Planning for a baby? 🤍

Preconception care starts before the positive pregnancy test.

The few months before you start trying are such a valuable window to check in with your nutrient status, start a quality prenatal, nourish your body, understand your cycle and get your partner involved too.

You don’t need a “perfect” diet, cycle or supplement routine before trying for a baby. It’s about giving yourself time to build some really good foundations before conception.

And remember preconception health is a team effort. S***m health matters too!

If you’re hoping to start trying in the next few months and want some guidance on what you should be focusing on, I offer personalised preconception support through Femi Naturopathy. 🤎

Low in these nutrients? Your grocery shop is a great place to start 🛒

Iron, magnesium, B12 and folate are nutrients I’m regularly thinking about in clinic, particularly when it comes to energy, nervous system health, hormones & preconception.

Food is foundational, but if you have a confirmed deficiency, sometimes food alone isn’t enough. This is where testing and individualised support can be really important.

What I’d BUY vs SKIP at Chemist Warehouse 🧴
This time: lower-tox skincare.

There are SO many skincare products to choose from, and a product being labelled “natural”, “sensitive” or “dermatologically tested” doesn’t necessarily tell you much about the overall formulation.

I’m not about labelling every ingredient as “good” or “bad”, I simply look for simpler formulations and try to minimise unnecessary fragrance, sensitising ingredients and potential endocrine-active exposures where good alternatives exist.

You don’t need to throw everything out! Use what you have, then make an informed swap when it runs out 🤍

Your skin is often about more than what you put on it 🤍

When supporting concerns like acne, eczema and inflammatory skin conditions, I like to look at the bigger picture and how gut health, hormones, nutrient status and the nervous system can all play a role.

Naturopathic treatment is individualised, which may include pathology testing, nutritional support, herbal medicine and dietary and lifestyle changes depending on what’s going on for you.

If you feel like you’ve tried everything but your skin is still struggling, it might be time to look a little deeper.

What I’d BUY vs SKIP at Woolworths 🧺🧼

Walking down the cleaning aisle can be confusing - especially when almost every bottle is marketed as natural, green, sensitive or eco-friendly.

For me, it comes back to the ingredient list, not just what’s written on the front of the bottle.
When I’m choosing products we use regularly around the home, I generally look for simpler formulations and try to minimise things like unnecessary synthetic fragrance, dyes, optical brighteners and certain sensitising preservatives where there’s an easy alternative.

And this isn’t about throwing everything in your cupboard in the bin. 🤍
Use what you have. Then when it runs out, make a more informed swap next time.

Skincare? Pantry staples? 👇

For general education only. “Low-tox” isn’t a regulated term and these are simply the products/formulations I personally prefer when comparing available options.
