While RSV is more common in toddlers, older Australians are especially at risk of suffering from severe cases - experiencing similar symptoms and now similar rates of infection to the flu.

This year, there have been 124,000 recorded cases of RSV, signalling a 150% increase in cases from the same time in 2023.

TV and radio personality Ita Buttrose encourages Australians to be on the lookout for signs of infection in a recent 9 News segment, leading a national campaign to raise awareness about RSV.

Though an RSV vaccine for over 60s has recently been approved by the TGA, the need for further work in the area to improve accessibility and effectiveness remains a priority within the world of clinical research.
