Equine-assisted counselling (EAC), often referred to as Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAT) or Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), harnesses the profound bond between humans and horses to facilitate healing and growth, particularly for individuals grappling with depression and anxiety.

As parents, it’s important that we help our boys to learn skills, attitudes and behaviours to be life-ready, to be good men. But how?

The Crowther Centre suggests there are three elements for young men and boys to develop positive masculinity in their lives.

Namely, that they are authentic, connected and motivated.

Authentic – that boys and young men are confident and content, kind and compassionate in their sense of self.

Connected – that boys have relationships formed on respect and trust

Motivated – to continually grow and to be a good person

The overall goal is that we want our boys and young men to base their decisions on the collective wisdom and practice of what it is to be a good person.

In the arena of domestic abuse, the spotlight often shines on female victims, and rightfully so. The statistics and narratives paint a grim picture of the widespread and devastating impact of intimate partner violence against women. However, amidst the shadows cast by these harrowing stories, another truth remains largely overlooked and underestimated – the reality of male victims of domestic abuse.

For far too long, societal perceptions and stereotypes have perpetuated the myth that domestic abuse is a gendered issue, with men cast primarily as perpetrators and women as victims. While it is undeniable that women are disproportionately affected by domestic violence, the experiences of male victims are no less valid or significant. It’s time to break the silence and acknowledge that abuse knows no gender boundaries.

Amidst the shadows cast by domestic violence stories, another truth remains largely overlooked and underestimated – the reality of male victims of domestic abuse.

The NDIS Needs to Stop Treating Lifelong Intellectual Disability Like a Condition That Can Be Fixed.

The growing expectation that a person with significant intellectual disability will eventually require less therapy because they are expected to ‘get better’ is inconsistent with contemporary clinical evidence, established disability practice, and the legislative intent of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

This approach raises serious questions about whether some planning decisions are being made with a sufficient understanding of intellectual disability, current clinical evidence, and the legislative intent of the NDIS.

This issue is not about whether participants should demonstrate outcomes. They should. The issue is that outcomes for a person with lifelong intellectual disability are often measured by maintaining functional capacity, preventing regression, improving participation and developing new adaptive skills within the limitations of their disability, not by eliminating the disability itself.

Reducing NDIS therapy funding because people with intellectual disability are expected to "get better" ignores clinical evidence, lifelong disability and the purpose of the NDIS.

Over recent months, many participants, families, support coordinators, therapists and registered providers have reported increasing inconsistency in planning decisions. While every participant’s circumstances are different, there appears to be a growing variation in how planners interpret the same legislation, evidence and NDIS rules.

NDIS planning decisions are becoming increasingly inconsistent. Explore why participants are receiving different outcomes, the impact on disability supports, and why sustainable reform should prioritise reducing waste before cutting essential services.
