GP FAQ: Why can't I wear Red Door perfume by Elizabeth Arden?

You may have seen posters in our clinic, asking our patients to let us know if they are wearing this specific perfume. It may seem a little ridiculous to ask our patients not to wear one specific perfume, but we do have a good reason.

Unfortunately, one of our staff members is extremely allergic to this perfume. A mild reaction causes coughing fits, hives, and she loses her voice. A larger reaction will cause anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening reaction which causes the body to go into shock. It causes her blood pressure to drop suddenly and her airways to narrow, making it difficult for her to breathe.

We understand that you do not know this when you get ready in the morning, or see the signs in the waiting room, so we will never refuse you service or cancel your appointment. All that happens is we isolate this staff member, so that she will not be around you for your appointment.

IMPORTANT BULK BILLING UPDATE!

The Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing are bringing out a new mandate. As of the 1st of July this year, every patient must provide written notice that they consent to be bulk-billed for every appointment.

This means that every appointment you have, including phone appointments, you will have to provide written consent for us to bulk-bill. You cannot unfortunately provide blanket consent for us to bulk-bill your appointments, there has to be separate written consent for each appointment you have.

So how are we going to comply with this mandate at Grace Medical Skin and Vein Centre? After your appointment, we will send a text message asking for you to reply with your consent. Please note you MUST RESPOND to this message, otherwise you may incur a fee. Paper forms will be available, but must be completed in the clinic before you leave.

GP Top Tip: Keep track of your medications!

If you are someone who takes a lot of medication, it is important to make sure you know when you need to get new prescriptions. Leaving it until the last minute not only stresses you out, but it also puts strain on you GP and the pharmacy.

'But it only takes 5 minutes!' you say. Well that is five minutes of time someone else has scheduled to see the doctor. If we dropped everything every time someone called with a 'quick 5 minute request', we would have no time for our scheduled appointments.

It also means your pharmacy has to spend time chasing you or your doctor for medications, which can make them run late as well. Your pharmacy will tell you when they have dispensed the last repeat, so when they mention, make a call to your GP straight away and organise an appointment for a renewal.

GP FAQ: When should I see my doctor, and when should I go to urgent care?

When you or someone you're with has an acute medical event, it can be hard to know in the moment what to do. Do you wait for an appointment see your GP or go to urgent care? Or do you go to hospital? Here is some general advice that may be able to help you.

Firstly, when you should go to your GP. Your family doctor is trained in general medicine, so a good rule of thumb would be if your concern could happen to anyone at anytime. Examples include fever, colds, ear infections, and small cuts.

As for urgent care, you visit here when you need treatment sooner than your doctors next available appointment. This would include things like vomiting or diarrhoea in children and the elderly, severe flu-like symptoms, or eye injuries.

Calling an ambulance or going to the emergency department may seem a bit drastic, but there are some things that neither your doctor or an urgent care clinic are equipped to deal with. This includes snake bites, fractured or broken bones, shortness of breath and chest pain.

Public Health Alert: Diphtheria

It's been all over the news, Australia is currently experiencing the worst outbreak of diphtheria in 35 years. But what exactly is diphtheria, how does it spread and what should you do if you think you may have it?

Diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection that can manifest in two ways.
The first is respiratory diphtheria, with symptoms including mild fever, sore throat, swelling in the neck, loss of appetite, and a thick, grey-white film growing across the throat and tonsils. The symptoms can cause severe difficulty in swallowing and breathing.
The second is cutaneous diphtheria, better known as skin diphtheria. This causes painful, swollen red sores on the skin, often on the legs, which can turn into slow-healing ulcers.

Diphtheria spreads differently depending on which type of diphtheria is present. Respiratory diphtheria is spread the same way most other bacterial respiratory infections do, via airborne droplets caused by sneezing and coughing. Skin diphtheria spreads by person to person contact with the sores.

If you suspect you may have either form of diphtheria, you should call your GP as soon as possible. You must call ahead and NOT simply walk in to a clinic. Your doctor will take a swab, send it away for testing, and phone you when they receive the results. In the meantime you must isolate yourself, wear a mask over your mouth and nose, and cover any sores.

GP FAQ: How do I take care of my wound at home?

So you've had a procedure and now you need to look after the wound from home. What should you do? Here is some general advice for you to follow.

Firstly, make sure you understand the instructions given to you by your nurse and your doctor. This advice will be tailored to you and to your specific needs. Always go by the instructions of your healthcare team above all else.

If your bandage is stuck, never force it off the wound. All this will do is rip your skin open, and you will be right back where you started, if not worse off. Instead, soak the bandage in warm water, and slowly peel away.

While we are on the subject of removing dressings, make sure that you are changing your bandages regularly, per your doctors instructions. If you are placing a new bandage on, make sure the area is dry. You can also use Vaseline, as this will act as a barrier against germs.

Now we come to the don'ts. Do not submerge the wound. This means no going the pool, a hot tub, the ocean or any other body of water. Bodies of water harbour germs, so shower instead.

Lastly, do not leave the area unprotected from the sun. Even when the wound has closed, the new skin is still healing and vulnerable. Use at least SPF 30+ to prevent discolouration and any sun damage.
