Join our free occupational therapy playgroup, facilitated by CQUniversity - Bundaberg Occupational Therapy students for children aged 0-5 years and their families.

Over 10 weeks, sessions will explore topics including fine and gross motor skills, sensory processing, emotional regulation and social interaction, all through engaging, play-based activities.

Every Child Communicates in Their Own Way - and That's Worth Celebrating.

As an Occupational Therapist, I often remind others that communication is so much more than eye contact and spoken words.

For non-speaking autistic children, being expected to make eye contact and verbally say "hello" or "good morning" to a teacher isn't a marker of progress - it can actually be a barrier to genuine connection and wellbeing. True inclusive, forward-thinking practice means honouring each child's authentic communication style, whether that's through gestures, AAC devices, visual supports, body language, or simply being present in a space without spoken greetings.

Forcing neurotypical expectations onto autistic children doesn't support their development - it asks them to mask who they are.

Let's move away from measuring success by how well a child conforms, and instead focus on how well we, as adults and educators, adapt to meet children where they are. That's what real inclusion looks like. 💛

Whether someone communicates through speech, AAC devices, body language, or another unique way, honouring their preferred method builds connection, confidence, and independence.

✨ OT Exchange 2026 ✨

What an awesome, exciting, and jam-packed two days! 💙

Filled with great food, inspiration, motivation, networking, reconnecting with friends, prizes, giveaways… and of course, Krispy Kremes for my girls 🍩😉

But beyond all the fun, what I truly took away from this conference was:

✨ Reflecting on who inspires me
✨ Remembering why I became an Occupational Therapist
✨ Renewed motivation to do meaningful work
✨ The importance of friendship and having a strong support network

Feeling grateful to be part of a profession that challenges, inspires, and reminds me of the difference we can make every day.
