🩵 RSV Awareness Week | 7–13 June 🩵
“Don’t Let Them Go Unprotected”

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is one of the leading causes of respiratory infection in young children and the leading cause of hospitalisation in infants during their first year of life.

While RSV often begins like a common cold, it can progress quickly and cause serious illnesses such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia — particularly in babies under 6 months of age.

Nearly all children will experience RSV by the age of two, with cases increasing throughout winter.

This RSV Awareness Week, we join the call to help protect Australia’s most vulnerable children through awareness, early recognition and supportive care.

Common RSV symptoms may include:
🤧 Runny nose
😷 Cough
🌡 Fever
😴 Poor feeding or lethargy
🌬 Wheezing or difficulty breathing

❄️ When to see a GP
Your child:
• Is breathing very fast or has difficulty breathing
• Is coughing and distressed
• Has a cough that’s getting worse
• Has difficulty feeding or drinking and has fewer wet nappies than usual
• Is changing colour in the face when coughing
• Is unusually tired or sleepy
• Is irritable

🚨 When to go to hospital or call 000
Your child:
• Has significant shortness of breath
• Has pauses in breathing
• Is turning pale or blue around the skin or lips
• Is drowsy or difficult to wake

Your GP should be the first point of contact for general medical care and winter illnesses. If further paediatric support is needed, our clinic is here to help on (03) 9468 0490.

❄️ When should you seek medical care for a winter illness?
Please arrange medical review if your child has:
• Difficulty breathing
• Poor feeding or drinking
• Persistent high fevers
• Unusual sleepiness
• Signs of dehydration
• Symptoms worsening instead of improving

Your family GP is the best first point of care for most childhood illnesses. If further paediatric assessment or support is needed, please feel welcome to contact our clinic on (03) 9468 0490.

❄️ WINTER WELLNESS TIPS ❄️

As winter approaches, it’s the perfect time for a gentle reminder about keeping your family healthy during cold and flu season. Here are some simple ways to support your child’s wellbeing this winter:

🛏️ Prioritise consistent sleep
Adequate rest helps growing bodies recharge and supports a healthy immune system.
• Toddlers & preschoolers: 10–13 hours
• Older children: at least 7+ hours

🍎 Focus on immune-supporting nutrition
Encourage plenty of fruits, vegetables, and balanced meals to help fuel healthy immune systems.

🤧 Teach good cough and sneeze habits
Encourage children to cough or sneeze into their elbow rather than their hands to help reduce the spread of germs.

🧼 Practice regular handwashing
Handwashing with soap and water is one of the best ways to prevent illness — especially after coughing or sneezing, before eating, after toileting, and after activities outside the home.

💉 Stay up to date with vaccinations
Check that your child and family are up to date with routine immunisations and seasonal vaccinations, including influenza, RSV, and whooping cough.

🏡 Keep unwell children at home
If your child becomes unwell, keeping them home from school or daycare can help prevent illness spreading to others and allows them time to rest and recover.

Wishing all our families a happy, healthy winter season! 💙
