Today, on Day, we take a moment to honour the selfless doctors, nurses, and aid workers delivering life-saving medical care in crisis zones across the globe. Thank you to all humanitarian workers for your courage and dedication.

World Humanitarian Day is a global celebration of people helping people. It is intended to raise public awareness of humanitarian assistance worldwide and the people who risk their lives in order to provide it.

With stroke, the first hour can decide the rest of someone's life.

Meet Dr Peter, Stroke Lead and Staff Specialist at North Canberra Hospital.

'I often compare a stroke to a bushfire,' Peter says. 'The earlier we put the fire out, the less damage is caused.'

When a patient arrives, the team works fast: neurological checks, an urgent CT scan, then a decision on treatment. With every minute that passes, more brain cells are lost.

This Stroke Week, there's one thing Peter wants people to understand: stroke doesn't wait for symptoms to get worse.

'Even mild or temporary symptoms should be treated as an emergency. Don't wait to see if they pass.'

The message is simple. Know FAST: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 000. And don't dismiss sudden confusion, vision loss or dizziness either.

'If in doubt, call 000. I'd always rather assess someone who turns out fine than have someone stay home while a stroke progresses.'

Because with stroke, every minute really does matter.

📣 ACT and regional NSW nurses: palliative care education grant

Are you a Registered Nurse looking to build your skills and confidence in palliative care?

The Country Women's Association (CWA) of NSW Palliative Care Nurse Education Grant offers up to $3,000 towards course fees for eligible nurses undertaking further palliative care education.

The grant is open to eligible nurses in the ACT and regional, rural or remote NSW. You don’t need to be a CWA member or have a connection with CWA of NSW to apply.

Applications are open from 1 August to 30 September.
