BEHIND THE BRICKS
Our Director, Tania, has been busy this past month working behind the scenes, building on one of her passions, LEGO®, to bring even more innovative and engaging tools to our community.

🌏 Learning Beyond Borders
Tania recently travelled to New Zealand to complete her Advanced Facilitator Training with Play Included for LEGO® Brick-Based Therapy.

👉 What is LEGO® Brick-Based Therapy?
This evidence-informed approach uses collaborative LEGO® play to support the development of communication, social, and emotional skills. Participants take on structured roles (such as builder, supplier, and engineer), encouraging teamwork, problem-solving, and meaningful interaction in a fun, motivating environment.

There are only a small number of Advanced Facilitators in Australia, and Tania is excited to use her expertise to help grow this community.

🟡🔵🔴🟢🟠🟣Exploring the Power of Six Bricks
Tania became Certified through Six Bricks Australia to use just six brightly coloured DUPLO® bricks to unlock powerful learning opportunities and engage our clients.

👉 What is Six Bricks?
This simplistic, versatile and playful method uses quick, hands-on activities to build skills such as memory, coordination, creativity, language, and problem-solving.

🧠 Diving into LEGO® Serious Play®
To top off a big month, Tania has also commenced training in LEGO® Serious Play!

👉 What is LEGO® Serious Play?
This method uses LEGO® models as a tool for thinking, communication, and problem-solving. Participants build physical representations of ideas, helping to unlock deeper reflection, storytelling, and insight. Making abstract concepts more tangible and easier to explore!

ELECTION TO ETHICS BOARD ANNOUNCEMENT

A message from our Director, Tania ...

I’m incredibly honoured and grateful to have been selected as an Elected Member of the Speech Pathology Australia Ethics Board.

Many thanks to my fellow speech pathologists for your support and trust in enabling me to contribute to this vital governance role within our association.

The Ethics Board plays a vital role in upholding the integrity of our profession, overseeing the Code of Ethics, managing complaints, providing ethical guidance, and supporting clinicians to navigate complex decisions. As a self-regulated profession, this work is essential to maintaining the confidence of the communities we serve.

I’m excited for the opportunity to represent our profession in this way. I'm eager to learn, to contribute, and to help uphold the highest standards of ethical practice. I look forward to working alongside an exceptional group of leaders, including Chair Dr Belinda Kenny, fellow speech pathologists, and community representatives, to support the continued strength and standing of our profession.

FUTURE VISION FEATURE: MARIANA
At Therapy Matters, this year we’re anchoring the theme of Future Vision. Despite the changes in the world at present, our team is looking ahead with hope, innovation, and wonder.

In both life and work, the way we think about the future shapes our wellbeing. Approaching tomorrow with curiosity and optimism sparks possibility, creativity, and motivation: not only for ourselves, but for those around us. A future-vision mindset reminds us that growth is something we create together, one thoughtful step at a time.

Today we celebrate Mariana, our therapy assistant who works in our Burleigh and Murwillumbah clinics as well as in our holiday group programs.

When we asked Mariana about her future-vision ideas, she shared:
“My hope is to help create communities where children and individuals with communication difficulties are supported with patience, understanding, and meaningful opportunities to participate fully. I will contribute to a future where all people feel heard, included, and respected in the way they communicate."

Mariana has been a part of Therapy Matters for 2 years. Mariana is a playful, engaging therapy assistant who brings a depth of wisdom to her role in working with children.

Mariana shapes the future for our clients, team, and community through her strengths in kindness, compassion and empathy for others.

WE'RE PRESENTING: SPA 2026

We are excited to announce that together with the talented Michelle Bihary, our speech pathologists Tania and Rachel will presenting an interactive workshop at SPA 2026 on the value of best practice supervision.

This interactive workshop draws on evidence-based models and our lived experience of bringing these models to life in our everyday supervision sessions at Therapy Matters. Our aim is to share practical frameworks and skills, aligned with contemporary research to reinvigorate supervision for supervisees, supervisors and organisations.

Professional and clinical supervision is one of the most well recognised and researched methods for enhancing professional skills, whilst fostering workforce capacity, sustainability and fulfilment. It is the cornerstone of quality practice in allied health services.

When we get supervision right, everyone benefits - clients, families, clinicians, clinics and the community.

We hope to see you this June at the Speech Pathology Australia National Conference on the Gold Coast!

MORE KEY WORD SIGNING IN THE COMMUNITY!

Huge thanks to Tamborine Mountain Kindergarten for inviting our Director, Tania back to extend the centre's key word sign knowledge and fluency with additional strategies for supporting children with speech and language difficulties and anchoring neurodiversity affirming approaches.

As an added bonus Tania had a wonderful road trip up the mountain and got to practice her sign for waterfall too as she took a bushwalk down Cedar Creek!

Key Word Sign is a tool or strategy which can be used to support children and adults with communication difficulties to understand and get their message across to others.

Key Word Sign (KWS) adds signs to spoken words. The key words in a message are signed. KWS is not a sign language, but it borrows the signs from the sign language of the country it is used in. In Australia this is Auslan.

Early Childhood Educators may use key word sign in one of two ways:
👍As part of an everyday inclusion tool to support all children's communication skills
👍As a targeted tool for a child in their care who has a communication disability or difficulties to help them to understand others and express themselves.

If you are interested in learning key word sign for your family, clinic, early childhood centre or school, we have a range of training opportunities available:

I CAN DO THIS NOW!
You may be hearing many stories in the media about the NDIS and the lives of disabled people, especially the proposed changes and cuts in the NDIS and their impact on people with disabilities and their families. We want to be a catalyst for families to share moments of optimism and hope, and highlight what their children are able to do now with access to life‑changing supports. Now is a critical time for our community and government to hear these stories. Now is the time to ensure that no child is left behind to fall through the cracks of government reform and miss the opportunity to achieve their goals.

Every child’s progress looks different. For some, change happens quickly. For others, it takes time. Growth may appear as big breakthroughs or as small but all are powerful moments. Sometimes a goal becomes too challenging, or the timing and resources available to a child or family are not quite right. In these moments, stepping sideways toward a more functional, meaningful, and achievable goal can be exactly what supports progress and wellbeing.

With so much uncertainty right now around the NDIS and Thriving Kids, we choose to anchor ourselves to what we know to be true.

💕Therapy matters.💕

Therapy matters in the lives of children with communication difficulties and disabilities. We must never lose sight of the power of communication, the right to have a say in life, and the importance of continuing to advocate, support, and innovate so children and families get what they truly need - no matter the constraints or endless changes of a funding scheme.

Every child is unique, and progress will always look different. We are proud of the effort, persistence, and courage shown by our clients each and every day, and we are honoured to support families as these moments unfold. Big or small, every step forward matters 💛

Check out the comments where you can save your own infographic "I can do this now" and share with your friends and family all that your child can do now because of life-changing NDIS funding.

FUTURE VISION FEATURE: KATE
At Therapy Matters, this year we’re anchoring the theme of Future Vision. Despite the changes in the world at present, our team is looking ahead with hope, innovation, and wonder.

In both life and work, the way we think about the future shapes our wellbeing. Approaching tomorrow with curiosity and optimism sparks possibility, creativity, and motivation: not only for ourselves, but for those around us. A future-vision mindset reminds us that growth is something we create together, one thoughtful step at a time.

Today we celebrate Kate, our Client Care Team member who works behind the reception desk at our Burleigh clinic.

When we asked Kate about her future-vision ideas, she shared:
“I envision a world that moves at a gentler pace, where people feel less rushed and less pressured, and have the freedom to breathe, connect, and live simply. A world where the focus is on enjoying the present moment and the things that truly matter, and every person has what they need to thrive."

Kate has been part of the Therapy Matters team for 7 years. She is recognised for her masterful organisational skills and tetris juggling of appointments and services. Kate is the warm and compassionate welcome for our clients that come to our reception desk at Burleigh.

WINTER SCHOOL HOLIDAY EXPERIENCES

Look out for the email in your inbox. BOOKINGS OPEN NOW!

Holiday group opportunities for children to learn, connect, communicate, and have fun in real-world settings, all under the guidance of our friendly and experienced team. These sessions are designed to support children to practise their skills in community-based activities alongside their peers

Our full-day programs are usually led by our talented therapy assistants, with experienced speech pathologists joining when needed to provide additional, personalised support for children with more complex communication or regulation needs.

What makes our group programs special?
In collaboration with your child’s therapist, we tailor each experience to support individual goals to help bridge the gap between clinic learning and everyday life.

We have the following groups available in Burleigh:
🤩Bounce Fun!
🤩Zoo Fun!
🤩Minecraft & Bounce Fun!
🤩Bowling Fun!
🤩Putt Putt Fun! NEW
And
🤩3 hour Brick POP! Brick Club in Murwillumbah NEW

They integrate your child's individual therapy goals into everyday settings, in collaboration with your child's speech pathologist. Every group is additionally anchored to achieve the following broad goals:
✅To communicate independently
✅To build friendships, teamwork, problem solving and negotiation skills
✅To develop self-advocacy skills to be in tune with and support your needs
✅To embrace your strengths

Because every child has unique strengths and support needs, there is always a matching process our team completes before confirming your child’s place, particularly if they haven’t attended one of our groups before or they have experienced challenges in group environments. Speaking with your child’s therapist is an important step to ensure the group is the right fit and to determine whether any additional supports may be helpful prior to or during the group program.
