Carbohydrates often get blamed for weight gain but the science tells a different story.
The truth: Carbs donโt automatically lead to weight gain. Like all nutrients, itโs your overall intake, balance and lifestyle that matter most.
Hereโs the evidence to debunk this myth:
Carbs are your bodyโs main fuel source
They provide essential energy for your brain, muscles and daily functioning. Cutting carbs too low can lead to fatigue, poor concentration, and low mood.
Rapid weight loss on low-carb diets is mostly water
When you eat carbohydrates, they are stored as glycogen in your body.
Each 1g of glycogen is stored with around 3โ4g of water.
When carbs are reduced, your body uses these glycogen stores and releases the attached water, leading to a quick drop on the scale. This is not the same as fat loss, which is why weight can stabilise or rebound once normal eating resumes.
Not all carbs are equal
The quality of carbohydrates matters most. Focus on:
โข Wholegrains (oats, brown rice, wholemeal bread)
โข Fruits and vegetables
โข Legumes (beans, lentils)
These provide fibre, vitamins, and support gut health, energy levels, and overall wellbeing.
The bottom line
You can absolutely lose weight while including carbohydrates. The key is choosing quality sources, managing portion sizes, and maintaining a balanced approach without unnecessary restriction.
