Harbison Harbison is a community-owned, not-for-profit organisation in the Southern Highlands of NSW.

For over 65 years, we’ve supported people through every stage of life with trusted care, connection and wellbeing for all ages. Harbison is a community-owned not-for-profit approved aged care provider committed to safe and quality care services. We have two locations on the traditional lands of the Gundungarra people, at Moss Vale and Burradoo (Bowral), in the Southern Highlands of NSW. We offer the full range of care and lifestyle services to support older people as their needs change. This includes a range of aged care accommodation: specialised dementia care, respite care, residential care, home care, palliative care and NDIS. In 1956, Harbison was established in the Southern Highlands by a group of volunteers who recognised a high, local need for aged care services. After more than sixty years, we remain dedicated to serving the local community and are a thriving organisation, employing over 350 staff. We are proud of the history we have in this beautiful area and with the generations who live here. We truly believe we offer the best place to grow old in the Southern Highlands.

Soon, older adults from around the world will jump on their Motiview bikes, explore incredible virtual rides and compete together in one of the world's most inspiring events celebrating movement, connection and healthy ageing.

Here at Harbison, our riders are already training hard and getting ready to represent Australia once again. Every KM ridden builds confidence, improves wellbeing and brings our residents together as they prepare for the global challenge.

🔬 Celebrating National Science Week with a little adventure!

Recently our residents had a brilliant day out at the UOW Science Space, exploring interactive exhibits, discovering fascinating facts and sharing plenty of laughs along the way. 💚

And what better way to finish the day than with an ice cream in the sunshine, taking in the beautiful ocean views 🍦🌊

What happens to food that doesn’t make it onto the plate? 🥗

As part of IMPACT, we’re taking a closer look at catering waste by weighing it, sorting it and, most importantly, understanding it.

Our kitchen waste is being monitored and weighed at every meal and is being separated into three categories:

♻️ Preparation waste – generated while preparing meals
♻️ Returned waste – food returning to the kitchen after service
♻️ Held service waste – food prepared for service but not served

Why does it matter? Because not all waste tells the same story.

By understanding where our waste comes from, we can start separating value driven waste from non-value waste, which helps us to identify where we can make meaningful changes without compromising choice, quality or the dining experience.

And the scales are only the beginning.

We’re also exploring kitchen garden opportunities, community waste partnerships and circular economy initiatives that could turn what was once considered “waste” into something with a whole new purpose.

Measure it. Understand it. Rethink it.

A little creativity can go a long way! 💜🖨️

Thanks to generous funding received through BDCU The Collective Impact Community Grant round, Harbison has been able to purchase two 3D Printers, and they have quickly become a wonderful and innovative addition to our activities and programs.

Our residents have been putting the printers to good use, creating everything from games and decorations to practical items and personalised pieces. The items pictured here are just some of the creations made by our residents, including a purple wool dispenser, Chinese checkers game, World Cup trophy, expanding rose, name tag and teddy bear with a heart. 🧸🌹🏆

The printers are also being used to create signage for residents' doors and, importantly, many of the small parts needed to keep our model train tracks running!

It’s fantastic to see technology sparking creativity, conversation and connection, while also creating practical solutions for our residents.

A huge thank you to BDCU for supporting Harbison with this grant.

Food is so much more than what’s on the plate and it is important to us. 💙

We are very proud of our Harbison team for completing the Maggie Beer Foundation Trainer Mentor Program, a journey focused on creating even better food and dining experiences for the people who live at Harbison.

Over the course of the program, our team has explored new ideas, built their skills and challenged themselves to think differently about flavour, nutrition, presentation and the overall dining experience for our residents. 👏👏

The Maggie Beer Foundation has beautifully captured some of our journey and learnings in this video and we are proud to share it!

A huge congratulations to our Harbison Board member Katie Constantinou, who was presented with the NSW Premier’s Community Service Award last week by Judy Hannan MP - Member for Wollondilly , on behalf of the Hon. Minns MP, Premier of NSW.

Katie has generously given her time and expertise to Harbison for eight years, the majority of it as a volunteer Board Director, including leading our Board as Chair through the extraordinary challenges of the pandemic.

Her contribution extends well beyond the boardroom, reflecting a genuine commitment to supporting people and strengthening our Southern Highlands community.

As Judy shared:
“Katie Constantinou is an extraordinary example of community service in action. What stands out to me is that Katie doesn’t simply lend her considerable professional and governance expertise around the boardroom table, she rolls up her sleeves, turns up and works alongside the people and organisations she serves.
Her many years of voluntary service on the Harbison Board, including leading as Chair through the incredibly challenging pandemic years, is just one part of a much broader contribution to the Southern Highlands.

Katie gives so generously of her time across aged care, dementia support, the local JP service, community initiatives and the arts, while also raising her family and maintaining her professional commitments.

I was very proud, as the local State Member for Wollondilly, to present Katie with a NSW Premier’s Community Service Award. It is wonderful recognition of someone who quietly gets on with the job, connects people and genuinely cares about making our community stronger.”

This award is wonderful recognition of Katie’s leadership, generosity and longstanding service across aged care, dementia support, community initiatives, the local JP service and the arts.

Congratulations Katie! We are very fortunate to have you as part of the Harbison community.
