Prison may interrupt access to drugs, but it does not automatically change the thinking, emotional triggers and coping patterns behind addiction.

Rehabilitation is not a reward or an excuse for offending. It is an opportunity to build accountability, understand what needs to change and prepare for a more stable life after release. ([The Whitehaven Clinic][1])

For many families, the word rehab can feel confusing when someone is in prison. Some people hear “rehabilitation” and think it sounds like a soft option. Others wonder why someone should receive treatment when their offending has caused harm. Families may also feel conflicted, especially if they...

TABISMS! Straight from the mind—and heart—of our Program Director, Tabitha Corser.

You cannot shame someone into recovery.

When addiction has caused hurt, fear, broken trust or repeated disappointment, it is understandable for families to feel angry and desperate.

You may have said things such as:
*“Look at what you are doing to us.”*
*“How many more chances do you expect?”*
*“Why can’t you just stop?”*

Those words often come from pain. But shame rarely creates the conditions needed for lasting change.

For many people, shame is already part of the addiction cycle. They use to escape emotional pain, regret what happened, feel worse about themselves—and then return to the same behaviour for relief.

This does not mean harmful behaviour should be excused.

Recovery still requires honesty, accountability and responsibility for the damage caused. But meaningful change is more likely when a person can understand what is driving the behaviour, recognise their patterns and learn healthier ways to cope.

At The Whitehaven Clinic, we do not define clients by their addiction or the worst choices they have made.

Through our private, one-to-one Day Rehab Addiction Recovery Process Program, we help clients examine the emotional and behavioural patterns beneath addiction, take responsibility without becoming trapped in shame, and build practical strategies for a healthier life.

Because people do not become well by being convinced they are worthless.

They change when they begin to understand themselves, accept responsibility and believe a different life is still possible.

We’re finalists… again!

For the second year in a row, The Whitehaven Clinic has been named a finalist in the Australian Women’s Small Business Champion Awards for Health Improvement Services.

There’s something particularly special about being recognised in awards that celebrate women-led businesses: the women building teams, creating jobs, backing themselves, solving problems and making a real difference in their communities.

To be named a finalist once was a huge honour. To be recognised two years running is something we’re incredibly proud of, and it reflects the work our whole team puts in every day with our clients and families.

The winners will be announced in Sydney at the end of September, which means there is clearly only one sensible thing left to do… buy a new frock! 😂

Whether we come home with a trophy or simply a very nice dress and a night out, we’re genuinely honoured to be standing alongside so many impressive women-led businesses from across Australia.

Sydney, here we come. 🏆

Alcohol is legal, widely available and woven into Australian social life. That can make it difficult to recognise when drinking has become a genuine problem.

In 2022–2023, approximately 31% of Australians aged 14 and over—around 6.6 million people—drank alcohol at levels that increased their risk of illness or injury. In Western Australia, the figure was slightly higher at 33%.

Australian guidelines recommend that healthy adults consume no more than:
- 10 standard drinks in a week
- 4 standard drinks on any one day

But quantity is only part of the picture.

You may still be working, parenting, managing a business and maintaining your responsibilities while privately noticing that alcohol has become the way you:
- switch your mind off after work
- cope with stress, loneliness or disappointment
- sleep or relax
- feel confident socially
- avoid difficult conversations
- numb emotions you do not want to face

Many Australians who drink at risky levels still consider themselves “social” or “light” drinkers. That is why comparing yourself with someone who appears worse can be misleading.

A more useful question may be: What role is alcohol playing in my life—and what is it beginning to cost me?

You do not have to drink every day, experience withdrawal or lose everything before asking for help.

The Whitehaven Clinic’s Addiction Recovery Process provides private, one-to-one support to help clients understand the emotional and behavioural patterns beneath their drinking and develop healthier ways to manage life without needing to escape from it.

Spotlighting client transformations!

Recovery is not about becoming perfect. It is about continuing to grow, learn and make healthier choices.

This reflection from one of our prison-based clients captures that perfectly.

At The Whitehaven Clinic, our Addiction Recovery Process Program helps clients understand the patterns behind their addiction, build greater self-awareness and develop practical strategies they can keep applying long after the program ends.

Because real change is not something you finish. It is something you keep choosing.

You do not have to lose everything before asking for help.

Addiction can begin affecting your relationships, confidence, health and peace of mind long before your life reaches an obvious crisis.

You may still be working, caring for your family and appearing to manage from the outside.

Privately, you may be making promises you cannot maintain, hiding how much the behaviour has increased or wondering why you keep returning to something you know is causing harm.

You do not have to wait until your relationship ends, your health deteriorates or your responsibilities become impossible to manage.

The Whitehaven Clinic’s Addiction Recovery Process provides private, one-to-one support designed around the individual—not a generic treatment formula.

The program helps clients understand the emotional and behavioural patterns beneath alcohol, drug use, gambling and other addictive behaviours, while developing practical strategies for lasting change.

Our clinic-based day rehabilitation format allows clients to undertake structured recovery work while remaining connected to their employment, family and everyday responsibilities.

The first step does not need to be a major commitment.

It can begin with one confidential conversation.

To speak privately with Holly about whether the program may be suitable for you or someone you care about, contact The Whitehaven Clinic on (08) 6454 2510 or email [email protected].

WANT TO BREAK FREE FROM PROBLEMATIC OR ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOURS?
You don’t need to hit rock bottom — or even consider yourself an “alcoholic”, "drug addict" or "gambler", — for your use to be affecting your life in a negative way.

Many of our clients come to us not because of a label, but because they’ve realised that their problematic behaviours have become a coping mechanism for deeper stress, overwhelm, or unresolved issues.

Rather than focusing on trying to “control” your problematic behaviours, we work with you to explore why you feel the need to return to it.

Understanding and addressing those underlying patterns with one of our experienced facilitators can be the start of real, lasting change. You’re not broken. You’re just ready for something better.

For a confidential chat — whether you're reaching out for yourself, a family member or partner — contact Holly, our lovely Client Services & Intake Coordinator, today on (08) 6454 2510. No GP referral needed.

Many families hope that prison will finally become the “rock bottom” that changes everything.

But prison may interrupt the cycle without changing the thinking, coping patterns and behaviours underneath it. Real recovery needs more than consequences—it needs intervention, accountability and a plan. ([The Whitehaven Clinic][1])

TABISMS! Straight from the mind—and experience—of our Program Director, Tabitha Corser.

Be careful what you tolerate. You are teaching people how to treat you.

When someone you love is affected by addiction, boundaries can become difficult to maintain.

You may overlook another broken promise, pay another debt, cover another absence or accept behaviour you once believed you never would. Often, this is not because you are weak. It is because you are trying to keep the peace, protect the family or prevent the next crisis.

But when harmful behaviour continues without a clear response, the pattern can slowly become the new normal.

A boundary is not about punishing, threatening or controlling another person. It is a clear decision about what **you will and will not accept**, and what you will do to protect your own wellbeing when that boundary is crossed.

Healthy boundaries may mean:
* refusing to lie or make excuses on someone else’s behalf
* protecting household finances
* not allowing drugs, alcohol or unsafe behaviour in the home
* stepping back from repeatedly rescuing someone from consequences
* following through on decisions you have clearly communicated

Setting boundaries does not mean you have stopped loving the person.

It means you are no longer allowing addiction to decide how your home, relationships and life will operate.

The Whitehaven Clinic provides private, addiction-informed support for partners and family members who feel confused about where helping ends and enabling begins.

We help you understand the patterns, develop realistic boundaries you can maintain and regain confidence in your own choices—without telling you whether you should stay or leave.

A period without drugs does not always mean the addiction pattern has changed.

A person may stop because they are in hospital, in custody, under pressure from family, unable to obtain the substance or frightened by a recent crisis.

That interruption can be important.

But when ordinary life returns, so can the stress, loneliness, rejection, anger, anxiety, shame or social pressure that previously led to use.

Addiction is characterised by difficulty controlling or stopping a substance or behaviour despite the harm it causes. It can affect mental and physical health, relationships and the ability to manage everyday responsibilities—but it is treatable.

This is why recovery cannot rely entirely on removal, restriction or willpower.

A person may also need to understand:
- what happens immediately before they use
- what emotional state they are trying to change
- how they justify the decision in the moment
- which environments and relationships increase risk
- how they respond to conflict, shame and disappointment
- what they will do differently when the urge returns

The Whitehaven Clinic’s Addiction Recovery Process is structured around the individual rather than a standard treatment formula.

We help clients examine the whole pattern—not simply the substance at the centre of it.

You may know what the addiction is costing you. Recovery can help you understand what keeps driving it.
