Big feelings can be overwhelming for our children.

And let’s be honest — they can overwhelm us as parents too. Before we know it, one big feeling can derail the whole household.

Sometimes, the best thing we can do is pause and focus on our own state first.

Take a breath. Slow down. Lower your voice. Give yourself a moment.

When we are calm and regulated, we are better able to respond to our children with patience and connection — rather than reacting from our own overwhelm.

And importantly, our children are watching. By showing them how we calm ourselves, we are role-modelling an important skill they can learn to use themselves.

We don’t have to be perfectly calm. We just need to show them what coming back to calm can look like.

💙 More mental health support for children and young people in the South West.

A new Acute Care Response Team (ACRT) is now supporting children and young people experiencing a mental health crisis, right in their local community.

The team provides rapid, flexible support for young people up to 18 years old, as well as their families and carers.

It can also provide extra support for young people living with ongoing mental health conditions who may need more frequent support.

Working alongside local health and community services, the ACRT helps connect young people and their families with the right support, when they need it.
