Your sleep position could be wrecking your spine. Here's how to fix it.
You spend 8 hours every night in one position. If that position misaligns your spine — that's 56 hours a week of compression and rotation. No wonder you wake up sore.
I'm Norris, the chiropractor at Uprise Chiropractic Byford. After every assessment, the first thing I ask new patients is — how do you sleep?
The worst position: STOMACH.
✗ Your neck is rotated 90° all night
✗ Lower back is over-arched
✗ Shoulders compressed forward
If you sleep on your stomach and have chronic neck pain, headaches, or lower back stiffness — your sleep position is a major factor.
The best positions: BACK or SIDE.
✓ Back sleeper: thin pillow, spine stays neutral
✓ Side sleeper: knees slightly bent, pillow between thighs to keep hips aligned, pillow under head thick enough to fill the shoulder gap
The pillow rule: thick enough to fill the gap between your neck and the bed — thin enough that your head doesn't tilt up or down.
If you've corrected your sleep position and you're still waking up in pain — it's not your bed. It's something underlying. A full spinal and postural assessment will find it.
