“Controversial” Breastfeeding Truths I Wish I Knew With My First Baby

No one told me the truth.

Not the full-bodied, heart-softening, sacred truth about breastfeeding.

About how it would test me, unravel me, and invite me into the deepest trust of my body and baby. How the world we live in would make me question everything.

Here are some “controversial” truths I wish I knew back then:

•You don’t need a feeding schedule. Your baby’s hunger isn’t predictable. They’re not a clock they’re a whole person, adjusting to life earthside. Follow them.

•A newborn’s belly is the size of a cherry. They don’t need ounces. The more they latch in the first few days of life is CRUTIAL to your supply and bond. Hence why you dont need a timers and why they are latching all of the time.

•It’s normal for a newborn to feed every 1–2 hours (or even more).

•Feed your baby, not your freezer. Pumping is not a measure of your worth or milk. Some women don’t respond to a pump at all. Your baby is the best indicator. You don’t even have to pump at all if you don’t want to.

•Cluster feeding isn’t “not enough milk.” It’s your baby regulating, growing, and asking for comfort it doesn’t mean you’re lacking. Your baby is adjusting.

•The pressure to formula feed often comes from fear not failure. The formula push, the bottles in hospital “just in case,” the whispers from relatives… it all chips away at your confidence.

•It’s okay that your baby needs you. Or only wants you. That’s not co-dependence. It’s normal.
You basically are natures pacifier.

I wish I had more support.
I wish I had someone to tell me I wasn’t broken.
I wish I had someone to say “You’re doing it right.”

No one told me this the first time…
Not the truth about how intense, intuitive, and sacred breastfeeding really is.
So I’m telling you.

This is for the mamas who feel like they’re doing it wrong because they’re doing it differently.
For the ones who are told to space out feeds, stretch sleep, give bottles “just in case.”

I see you.
I’ve been you.

Trust your baby.
Trust your body.
You’ve got this.
