Getting around Cairns without driving can add up fast. But a lot of people don't know about the Queensland Taxi Subsidy Scheme (TSS). πŸš•

πŸ’š It pays half your taxi fare, up to $30 a trip
πŸ’š There's no limit on the number of trips you can take
πŸ’š The subsidy goes straight to the driver, so there's no extra paperwork for you

To be eligible, you need to be a permanent Queensland resident with a disability that meets one of the scheme's criteria. Things like relying on a wheelchair, a severe mobility or vision impairment, or needing someone with you to travel safely.

Helping you access schemes like this is exactly what support coordinators are here for, and they can take a lot of the paperwork off your plate.

⏰ One important heads up. The Queensland Government has confirmed TSS access for eligible NDIS participants only until 31 December 2026, while longer term transport arrangements are worked out. So if you think you're eligible, it's worth sorting sooner rather than later.

Want a hand checking your eligibility or applying? We're happy to help πŸ’š

That hobby you’ve been thinking about trying "one day"? It might be closer than you think. πŸ’š

The NDIS is designed to help you build a life on your terms. If there’s something you’ve always wanted to try, maybe pottery, a cooking course, or getting back out on the water, your plan can often help make it happen.

Here’s how it usually works:
✨ Your Core budget can cover a support worker to help you participate and handle the transport.
✨ Your Capacity Building budget can sometimes fund the actual classes when you’re learning a brand-new skill.

It’s all about connecting the activity to your goals.

Questions about your plan?
We’re here to help you navigate the details.

Isolation is one of those things people don't always talk about. But it's real, and it's common, especially when getting out feels like hard work. πŸ’š

The good news is that connection can be built back up, gently. A regular coffee out. A walk somewhere nice. Getting to a group or an activity you enjoy. Sometimes just having someone reliable to go with is the whole difference between staying in and getting out.

Community access support is there for exactly this. Not to take over, but to make the world feel a little more reachable.

If the days have been feeling small lately, let's talk about opening them back up. πŸ’š

You don't have to wait until you're home from hospital to organise your support. πŸ’š

Your NDIS supports can be arranged before you're even discharged.

Once the NDIA knows you've been admitted, their hospital discharge team gets in touch to help line things up, so support, equipment and any home changes can be ready for when you go home.

It works best when planning starts early. A support coordinator can help you manage this transition with confidence.

Heading home soon? Let's get ahead of it.

Night time is when support matters most for a lot of people, and there are actually two different kinds of overnight support. Knowing the difference can make your Core budget go a lot further. πŸŒ™

πŸ’š A sleepover (inactive overnight). Your worker is there through the night and can sleep when they're not needed, ready to help if you call. It's charged as one flat rate for the night, and that rate already includes up to 2 hours of active help if you need it.

πŸ’š An active overnight. Your worker stays awake and on hand the whole night. This one is charged by the hour, so across a full night it costs quite a bit more than a sleepover.

Which one is right comes down to how much help you actually need after dark, and it's worth matching it properly so your funding isn't stretched thin.

We provide both across Far North Queensland, built around your actual nights. Not sure which fits? Ask us. πŸ’š

If getting around your own home has become harder, the NDIS may be able to fund changes to make it safer and easier to live in. 🏠

Home modifications can include:
πŸ’š Grab rails and a handheld shower in the bathroom
πŸ’š A ramp to replace steps at the entrance
πŸ’š Slip resistant flooring
πŸ’š Widening a doorway for wheelchair access
πŸ’š Better lighting and visual contrast for low vision

They're grouped by size. Minor mods, usually under $10,000, like grab rails, are often based on your OT's recommendation with no individual quotes needed. Larger or structural jobs need a specialist assessor's report and quotes from licensed builders.

An occupational therapist assessment is almost always the starting point.

Thinking your home could work better for you? We can help you take the first step. πŸ’š

Personal care can cover help with showering, dressing, grooming and getting ready for the day. It is some of the most intimate support there is. How it's done matters just as much as that it's done. πŸ’š

Good personal care never feels rushed or clinical. It's unhurried, it follows your lead, and it protects your dignity every step of the way. You decide how, when, and what you're comfortable with.

Our team supports people with personal care across Cairns and Far North Queensland, always with respect front and centre.

If this is something you or someone you love needs a hand with, we're here to talk it through gently. πŸ’š

Did you know you can borrow a beach wheelchair in Palm Cove or Ellis Beach, for free? πŸ–οΈ

They have big balloon wheels that roll straight over soft sand, and there's also an all-access mat to get you from the path onto the beach and along the hard sand at the waterfront. It's the difference between watching the beach and actually being on it.

πŸ“ PALM COVE
Available during patrol hours, year-round. The chair is stored in a shed at the back of the Palm Cove Surf Life Saving Club on Williams Esplanade β€” just ask the lifeguard on duty. To arrange one ahead of time, you can call Palm Cove Surf Life Saving Club on (07) 4059 1244

πŸ“ ELLIS BEACH
Collect from the lifesaver station on Captain Cook Highway and ask the lifeguard on duty. Available from midday on Saturdays, plus all day Sunday and public holidays, from April to November.

πŸ’° Cost: completely free. It's provided by Cairns Regional Council.

⚠️ The one catch: lifeguards can't operate the chair for you, so you need to bring a support person with you.

That's exactly where we come in. If a proper day at the beach has felt out of reach, our support workers can be the person who makes it happen. Get in touch and let's plan it. πŸ’š

Small changes often lead to big moments of independence.

A lot of people don't realise that for low-risk items under $1,500, you can usually skip the quotes and NDIA approval process. This means everyday tools like non-slip mats or easy-grip cutlery can be bought directly from your Core budget.

It is all about making your plan work for you. Just ensure that any item you choose links back to the specific goals in your plan.

If you are here in Cairns or Far North Queensland and have your eye on something that might help, reach out. We are happy to help you check if it is covered before you buy. πŸ’š

Dry season is the best time of year to get out and about in Far North Queensland. β˜€οΈ Cooler mornings, low humidity, clear skies, it's made for it.

A few accessible ways to enjoy it:
πŸ’š An early stroll along the Esplanade
πŸ’š The weekend markets for a coffee and a wander
πŸ’š A shady picnic in the Botanic Gardens
πŸ’š Watching the boats come in at the Pier
πŸ’š A swim at the local pool

Community access support is there to make these outings easier, whether that's a hand with transport, someone alongside you, or just the confidence of not doing it solo.

You don't need a big plan or a full day. Sometimes getting out for an hour in good weather is the whole win.
