What is Cone-rod Dystrophy, or CORD?

CORD is a group of inherited eye disorders, which cause vision loss over time. CORD can also occur spontaneously. The cones and rods, which are light-sensitive cells in the retina, slowly deteriorate, affecting your perception of colours, depth, amd peripheral vision. People with CORD may also get spots in their vision, and have a heightened sensitivity to light.

According to the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) there are over 2 million sufferers of CORD worldwide, and are the leading cause of blindness in working age adults. Unfortunately, there isn’t a cure for CORD (yet) but there is promising research into stem cell and gene therapy.
Management includes:
regular eye checks, no matter the level of your vision
orientation and mobility training
using low vision aids such as magnifier, closed-circuit televisions and technology and apps on your devices
educational support for students at school or university
extra lighting if you need help in dark environments
not smoking
having a healthy diet - remember those green leafy veges!

Love a bold eyeshadow look? So do we! Here’s a few tips to keep in mind when applying makeup!

💄 Choose quality, over quantity! The price of makeup doesn’t necessarily relate to value. It you find a product you like and have no reaction to, keep using it!

🧼 Keep it clean: when applying products around the eyes, cleanliness is key! Always wash your brushes, applicators, and hands.

🧴 Always do a test with new products, in case you’re sensitive or allergic to it. Use a test swab on your forearm or neck, and watch it for redness, swelling, or itchiness.

👀 False lashes? Be careful you don’t get the glue in your eye, and that not too many of your natural lashes are pulled out when you remove them.

🫧It’s important to cleanse your face and eyes daily to remove any residue, especially around the lashes. Bugs love living in the build up left behind, such as mascara and the glue from false lashes.

Any sign of irritation or inflammation we recommend that you stop using the product immediately. Seek medical assistance if it persists.

Have you noticed that Johnny Depp almost always wears tinted glasses? 🕶️

This may be due to his eye issues! Depp revealed that he is “blind as a bat” in his left eye, and has severe nearsightedness in his right eye. He also had amblyopia (a lazy eye) and had to undergo patching treatment when he was a child, which could be the reason for the reduce vision. If not caught early enough, amblyopia can have life long implications.

His glasses are prescription lenses, helping him to see clearer. He stated that when acting in roles where he can’t wear spectacles he basically can’t see a thing. Tinted lenses can help reduce glare and to improve depth perception! Or maybe he wears them simply because they looks cool!

People often assume that those who are legally blind have zero vision, but vision loss and legal blindness is actually a spectrum!

In Australia, the most commonly accepted definition of legal blindness (based on the WHO’s standards) is visual acuity of 6/60 (or less, after correction with glasses or contact lenses) on the Snellen chart. Or, if the individual cannot read at 6 metres, what a person with “normal” vision can read from 60 metres away.

Legally blind individuals may also have a very limited range of vision (less than 20 degrees), meaning they cannot see anything in their periphery, or they may have blind spots.

Keep in mind that legal blindness and visual impairment are also somewhat different. If your vision has deteriorated to the point of negatively affecting your daily life (even when wearing glasses or taking corrective measures), see your optometrist for a referral to Best Practice Eyecare for a diagnosis. There may be a treatment we can help you with.
