What Are the Stages of Esophageal Cancer?

The stages of esophageal cancer are given a number (I through IV); the higher the number, the more advanced the cancer. The stages are:

• Stage 0. Abnormal cells (not yet cancer) are found only in the layer of cells that line the esophagus. This stage is often found when someone with Barrett's esophagus has a routine biopsy.

• Stage I. Cancer cells are found only in the layer of cells that line the esophagus.

• Stage II. The cancer has reached the muscle layer or the outer wall of the esophagus. In addition, the cancer may have spread to one or two nearby lymph nodes (small glands that are part of the immune system).

• Stage III. The cancer has reached deeper into the inner muscle layer or the connective tissue wall. It may have spread beyond the esophagus into surrounding organs and/or has spread to more lymph nodes near the esophagus.

• Stage IV. This is the most advanced stage. The cancer has spread to other organs in the body and/or to lymph nodes far from the esophagus.

How is esophageal cancer treated?

Treatment options to discuss with your doctor include:

Surgery: Surgery is used to remove as much of the esophageal cancer as possible.
Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy uses high energy x-rays or other types of radiation to kill the cancer cells.
Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy uses anti-cancer drugs to kill the cancer cells. Chemotherapy is used when the cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body.
Targeted therapy: Targeted therapy is aimed at the changes in cancer cells that help them grow, divide, and spread.

Ask about esophageal cancer screening

Screening for esophageal cancer may be an option for people with Barrett esophagus. Barrett esophagus is a precancerous condition caused by chronic acid reflux. It increases the risk of esophageal cancer.

If you have Barrett esophagus, ask your healthcare professional about screening. Screening typically involves exams to look at the inside of the esophagus for signs of cancer.

Esophageal cancer is a growth of cells that starts in the esophagus. The esophagus is a long, hollow tube that runs from the throat to the stomach. The esophagus helps move swallowed food from the back of the throat to the stomach to be digested.

Esophageal cancer usually begins in the cells that line the inside of the esophagus. Esophageal cancer can happen anywhere along the esophagus.
