A common misconception around counselling is that you need to wait until you're in crisis to seek support.

We encourage potential clients not to wait that long – we can help if you're feeling persistently stressed, overwhelmed, stuck, emotionally exhausted, or simply wanting to understand yourself better. Investing in your mental health is one of the most valuable things you can do for your future wellbeing.

Sleep and mental health are closely connected: poor sleep can worsen anxiety, low mood and stress, while good sleep supports emotional regulation and resilience.

Experts recommend adults get between 7-9 hours sleep a night. If you know you're not getting that, it's time to make some changes! Establishing a pre-bed routine, avoiding screens before bed and not eating too late can all help with more – and better quality – sleep.

Anxiety isn't always obvious. It can look like overthinking, perfectionism, difficulty relaxing, irritability or constantly expecting something to go wrong.

It's important to learn what anxiety looks like for yourself, because recognising anxiety early can make it easier to access support before it begins affecting daily life.

If anxiety is becoming overwhelming, speaking with a psychologist can help you develop practical strategies to manage it.

Birth Trauma Awareness Week (13–19 July) reminds us that birth is not always experienced as joyful. For some parents, birth can be traumatic and leave lasting emotional effects long after the physical recovery.

Birth trauma can contribute to anxiety, depression, PTSD, relationship challenges and difficulties adjusting to parenthood. Seeking support is a sign of strength, and recovery is possible with the right care.

If your birth experience continues to affect your wellbeing, know that compassionate psychological support is available and we're just a phone call or online booking away. We also have more information about Medicare rebates on our website.

A panic attack can feel frightening, especially if you've never experienced one before. Although everyone's experience is different, common symptoms can include:

▪ A racing or pounding heart
▪ Shortness of breath or feeling like you can't get enough air
▪ Chest tightness or discomfort
▪ Dizziness or feeling lightheaded
▪ Sweating or trembling
▪ Nausea
▪ Tingling sensations
▪ Feeling detached from yourself or your surroundings
▪ A sudden fear that something terrible is about to happen

Panic attacks often come on quickly, reach their peak within minutes, and then gradually ease. Even though they can feel overwhelming, the sensations themselves are not usually dangerous.

If you've had symptoms like these for the first time, or you're unsure what's causing them, it's important to seek medical advice to rule out other health conditions.

If panic attacks are happening regularly or are making you avoid certain places or situations, speaking with a psychologist can help. Effective, evidence-based treatments are available, and many people find their symptoms improve with the right support.
