Every Body is this year's World Sexual Health Day theme: a declaration that sexual health, rights, justice and pleasure belong to every person, in every body, without exception.

The theme holds two ideas at once: every person, and the body they inhabit. Sexual health is always lived in a body, and what determines whether that body experiences care and dignity isn't the body itself, it's the world that body moves through; the policies, the power structures, the stigma, and the assumptions built into the systems we all rely on.

Each September, people around the world unite for World Alzheimer's Month, raising awareness and challenging the stigma that still surrounds Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

In 2003, scientists finished mapping the entire human genome.

After 13 years of collaboration between researchers across the US, UK, Japan, France, Germany, China, and more, the Human Genome Project mapped nearly all 3 billion building blocks that make up human DNA: one of the biggest scientific team efforts in history.

Here's something interesting: the genome sequence wasn't based on just one person. It was a blend of DNA from multiple anonymous volunteers, with about 70% coming from one individual and the rest from 19 others.

One of the biggest clinical trials in history helped defeat polio.

In the early 1950s, polio was one of the most feared diseases in the world: causing nearly 60,000 cases a year in the U.S. alone, with around a third of those affected left paralysed.

In 1954, scientists set out to test something that could change everything: a new vaccine developed by Jonas Salk.

To find out if it worked, over 1.8 million children across the United States took part in the trial, making it one of the largest clinical trials ever conducted. Hundreds of thousands of children received either the vaccine or a placebo, while over a million more were studied as part of the research.

It wasn't just doctors and scientists involved: an incredible 325,000 volunteers, including nurses, teachers, and everyday citizens, helped run the trial. There was no technology involved either: results were tracked by hand, using pencils and paper.

When the results came in the following year, they showed the vaccine was 80–90% effective at preventing paralytic polio: a huge breakthrough that helped protect millions of children around the world.

This trial laid the groundwork for how large-scale clinical trials and vaccine studies are still run today.

Who decides which treatment a participant receives in a clinical trial? In many studies, this is determined through a process called randomisation.

Randomisation is a method used in clinical trials to assign participants to different treatment groups through a controlled randomised process, rather than by choice.

For example, participants may be allocated to:

🔹 A new treatment group
🔹 A standard treatment or placebo group

This allocation is typically performed using a computer-generated system to ensure it is unbiased and reproducible. Randomisation helps ensure that:

✔️ Results are unbiased
✔️ Groups are comparable
✔️ The treatment effect is reliable and scientifically valid

In simple terms: randomisation is similar to a controlled, scientific way of "drawing names from a hat", designed to ensure fairness, minimise bias, and produce reliable evidence.

This allows researchers to more confidently determine whether observed outcomes are due to the treatment itself, rather than external factors.

You will always be informed during the consent process if treatment is assigned randomly. Under ethical guidance, all treatment groups must be appropriate and ethically justified for participants.

1 in 20 kids will face a birth defect or genetic disease. That's 12 kids born every minute, worldwide. At Emeritus Research, supporting research that changes lives is what we do every day, so this cause hit close to home.

Every year, National Stroke Week calls on everyday Australians to become F.A.S.T. heroes: learning to recognise the signs of stroke and acting quickly when it strikes.

F.A.S.T. stands for:

- Face: is it drooping?
- Arms: can they lift both arms?
- Speech: is it slurred or strange?
- Time: time is critical. Call an ambulance straight away.

A stroke is always a medical emergency, and knowing these signs, and acting on them immediately, can make all the difference to someone's recovery.

At Emeritus Research, we see first-hand the importance of early recognition, timely intervention, and ongoing research in improving outcomes for conditions like stroke and heart failure. Awareness days like this help drive the education and urgency needed to protect the people we love.

Natasha has been part of the clinical research world for almost five years, and now leads our Clinical Trial Team at our Melbourne site.

She started her career at Monash University, and quickly fell in love with clinical trials, going on to become a Clinical Trial Coordinator before joining Emeritus Research in 2024. Her hard work and dedication saw her promoted to Team Lead in late 2025!

Natasha's favourite part of the job? Seeing the real, positive impact that studies can have on patients, and following their progress throughout their research journey. She also loves helping her teammates grow, mentoring other Coordinators and Research Assistants along the way.

When she's not at work, you'll find Natasha training for half marathons, or in the kitchen baking something sweet for family and friends!
