Canberra Medicare Mental Health Centre

Canberra Medicare Mental Health Centre We are a free service to help people in the Canberra community. You don’t need to make an appointment

Whilst we will support people in distress and help you find the right support, Canberra Medicare Mental Health Centre is not a crisis service. If you do present in crisis, our team will help you to connect to an emergency department or appropriate emergency service to get immediate help. Canberra Medicare Mental Health Centre is part of the nationwide Medicare Mental Health Centre program and this service is supported by funding from the ACT PHN through the Australian Government’s PHN Program.

Before you try the next wellness trend, ask one question. Who benefits from this?

Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week is on now, 7 to 13 September, and this year's theme is redefining wellness, the stories we're sold about health and our bodies.

Wellness culture rarely announces itself as a diet. It arrives as discipline, as optimisation, as a cleaner version of you. It is sold through routines, supplements, tracking and before and after stories. But narrow ideals dressed up as health can still drive body dissatisfaction, disordered eating and eating disorders.

If you are concerned about yourself or someone you know, the ACT Eating Disorders Clinical Hub is a centralised intake and triage service for anyone in the ACT concerned about themselves or someone else with an eating disorder. The Hub is free and takes referrals from anyone concerned about themselves or someone else, on 02 5124 4326. Butterfly's National Helpline is 1800 33 4673.

Women's Health Week runs from 7 to 11 September, and this year's theme is do it anyway.

It is about taking small steps towards your health, even when life is full. Each day has a focus: to fuel, to move, to rest, to breathe and to connect. Thursday, day 4, is dedicated to mental wellbeing and to the many things that can shape how you may feel across your life.

If looking after your mental health is one of the things that keeps sliding down the list, our Medicare Mental Health Centres are here.

Wear it Purple Day is today, a day to stand with LGBTQIA+ young people and celebrate diversity in all its forms.

The theme this year, Colours of Courage, honours the everyday bravery it takes to show up as yourself, and reminds us all to keep building the safer, kinder spaces LGBTQIA+ young people deserve.

Our Medicare Mental Health Centres in Canberra City and Tuggeranong are inclusive, welcoming and free. Walk in Monday to Friday, canberrammhc.com.au.

You can also connect with meridianact.org.au and genderrights.org.au for LGBTQIA+ specific support across the ACT.

What a milestone to celebrate. Thank you to Alicia Payne MP, Assistant Minister Emma McBride MP and Director Vanessa Hamilton for spending time with our team at our Canberra City centre, and to Rachael for sharing her experience with such honesty.

Half a million visits nationally, and 15,000 in Canberra, means half a million moments where someone reached out for support.

That's what we're here for.

Winter can have a significant impact on mental health. Shorter daylight hours, colder weather, and reduced time outdoors can affect mood, energy levels, sleep patterns, and overall wellbeing.

Here are a few small ways to look after your mind through the cold months:

🕯️ Warm your senses - A hot drink held in both hands, a wool jumper, a hot shower. Small comforts steady the nervous system.
🌤️ Chase the light - Get outside during the sunniest part of the day, even for ten minutes. It’s a quick way to boost your vitamin D and it matters more than you'd think.
🧘 Slow your breathing - Four counts in, six counts out, repeat for a minute and your body will follow.

If winter is feeling heavy, our centres in Canberra City and Tuggeranong are here for you. Visit canberrammhc.com.au to find out more.

Bullying doesn't only happen in schoolyards.

For many adults it shows up in different environments. Anxiety, sleep issues, self-doubt and burnout are all common responses to bullying.

This week is Bullying No Way Week. The 2026 theme is Small Acts. Big Impact.

If you're carrying the weight of bullying now or from the past, our Medicare Mental Health Centres are free, walk-in and here to help -canberrammhc.com.au.

The cold makes it easy to stay inside. But some of the best things for your mental health happen outside, in the fresh air, with people around you.

We love the work of Running for Resilience: a community of walkers and runners who gather each week to move, connect and quietly remind each other that everyone faces challenges, and no one has to carry them alone.

Free weekly events across Canberra. Whether you walk or run, you're welcome.
