Different Hues, different clues! 🌈🔬

Blood collection tubes are colour-coded by their additives and must follow a precise order of draw to prevent cross contamination between tubes.🩸🧪

Our trained collection staff will select the required tube types and the amount of them based on the testing requested by your doctor. 🩺

Our most common routine blood testing usually requires 1 gold top serum SST tube and 1 purple top EDTA tube. 💜💛

You Toe-tally want to know this❗️🦶

With the weather warming up and toes being on show, our microbiology department get in influx in fungal culture testing on toe nail samples. 💅🩴☀️🕶️

The most common cause for tinea is the Trichophyton Species. Cultures can take up to 4 weeks to grow. We also perform microscopy (look at a smear under the microscope) to search for the presence of hyphae or spores. 🔬🧫

Did you know❓

Haematoxylin is a natural dye derived from trees which are native to Mexico and America. Haematoxylin is used in our most common stain, the H&E (Haematoxylin and Eosin) stain, which highlights the nuclear detail in cells, turning them a deep purple-blue colour. 💙💜

The H&E stain is the gold standard used for helping to diagnose diseases such as cancer. 🔬

Your heart is working around the clock! ❤️ At rest, it pumps around 5 litres of blood every minute — that’s your entire blood volume circulating through your body roughly once every minute! 🤯

So, what happens when you have a blood test? 🧪

A standard blood test usually takes just 5–30 mL of blood — a tiny amount compared to the litres circulating through your body.

And don’t worry, your body gets straight to work replacing it! 💪 Plasma is replenished within 24 hours, while your blood cells are replaced over the following days.

Capital Pathology Skin Essentials Seminar ⭐️

On Saturday 29 August, doctors from across the region joined Capital Pathology for an educational workshop focused on the diagnosis and management of melanocytic lesions. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️🔬

The day explored current guidelines, dermatoscopy and imaging, pathology interpretation, treatment options and practical surgical skills.

A sincere thank you to Dr Ingrid Fewings, Dr Karen Jenkins, Dr Alicia Fong, Dr Susan Beale, Dr Joanna Mya and Dr Philip Rome for sharing their expertise. 👏

Fun Fact Friday❗️⭐️🧪

Did you know to be a Medical Scientists in the lab you need to have completed a Bachelor of Medical Science? 🎓

After completing the degree they then need to do further training to become a morphologist in Haematology. 🩸

Several months of intense training occurs before they review patient blood under a microscope to help diagnose disease. 🦠 🔬

They look at the red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets for different features that can give insight to what is occurring in the body. 🔎

One of those cells they look at is a neutrophil, and sometimes they find ones that smile back. 😄
