🌈 Let’s talk about our senses!🌈

We all learned about the five senses at school - but in everyday life, our senses play a much bigger role than we might realise!

Children naturally seek out sensory experiences as they explore the world around them. They might love touching different textures, listening to sounds, spinning, jumping, crashing into cushions, getting messy, or exploring exciting movement experiences.

These experiences aren’t just fun - they help children learn, regulate, connect and make sense of the world around them.

For some children, sensory experiences can feel overwhelming, uncomfortable or unfamiliar. They may need a little extra support to explore new sensations safely and confidently.

At myOT!, we support children to discover and engage with a wide range of sensory experiences at their own pace. Through playful, guided sensory activities, we help children build:

- Confidence
- Emotional regulation
- Self-awareness
- Body awareness
- Coping strategies
- Overall wellbeing

Because when children feel comfortable and confident in their sensory world, they can participate more fully - and find more joy in everyday life.

At myOT!, our occupational therapists use social stories to help children better understand everyday situations, routines, and expectations in a way that feels predictable and safe. Social stories are often used to prepare children for new or challenging experiences, such as starting school, attending appointments, managing changes in routine, learning toileting skills, or engaging in play with peers. They break down what will happen, what the child might see or hear, and what they can do if they feel worried or overwhelmed. By providing clear and structured information, social stories can help reduce anxiety, support emotional regulation, improve participation, and build confidence and independence across home, school, and community settings.

Does your child avoid certain textures or gag when trying new foods? Picky eating is often connected to sensory challenges, and it can make mealtimes stressful for the whole family.
Our Munch and Crunch feeding groups create a positive, low-pressure space for kids to explore new foods. Through playful activities, predictable routines, and learning alongside peers, children slowly increase the variety of foods they feel comfortable eating. Families often notice calmer meals, better nutrition, and a more relaxed relationship with food.

Do your child’s emotions seem to go from calm to full-on meltdown in just seconds? This often happens when their “emotional regulation toolkit” isn’t yet equipped to handle the ups and downs of daily life. As adults, we’ve had years to learn ways to manage feelings like excitement, anger, and sadness, but children’s minds are still developing these important skills, and their emotions can feel ‘big’.
At MyOT! Therapy, we help your child build their emotional toolkit in a supportive and playful way. Through sensory exploration, movement breaks, and visual tools, we teach kids to recognise and understand their feelings. Providing them strategies to manage those emotions throughout the day. This helps children accept that every emotion is valid and empowers them to respond calmly and confidently, leading to more positive moments at home and school.

Is your child still struggling with toilet training beyond the expected age? You're not alone, and there is help. Many children experience challenges with toilet routines due to sensory sensitivities, anxiety, or developmental delays. For example, a child who hides to p**p or holds it in may suffer from constipation or frequent accidents. Here at myOT! we offer a toileting workshop for parents aimed at giving you the tips and tricks to assist you with your toileting journey in the home.
