An example of how this benefits the brain:
Music activates many areas of the brain. And it turns out your brain loves improvisingāsomething scientists can actually see on brain scans. According to neuroscientist and musician Karen Barrett (TAG) of UCSF, improvising music changes how your brain works.
When expert jazz musicians improvised, the part of the brain linked to self-judgment quieted down, while areas tied to personal expression became more active.
In another study, children improvising music activated the brain's reward system more than when they simply played a memorized scale.
Barrett says you don't need to be a musician to reap the benefits. Painting, doodling, dancing, knitting, writing or trying any creative activity can help quiet your inner critic and give your brain a healthy workout.
Sometimes the point isn't making something perfect, itās the process of making something up as you go.
