There is a particular pleasure in playing golf before the day has decided what else it wants to become.

Nine holes can leave time for lunch in Manuka, an afternoon at home or absolutely nothing scheduled after twelve. Living close to the golf course makes the game feel less like an expedition and more like an option, one that can be taken when the weather, company and energy all agree.

There is the Saturday list a house creates: clear the gutters, repair the gate, tidy the side path, organise the shed and investigate the noise that only appears when nobody else is listening.

Then there is the list you might write for yourself: visit the markets, call a friend, take a walk, finish the book or leave the entire day beautifully unplanned.
