Winning Position Bike fitter, remedial and sports massage therapist based in North Canberra, Australia

Hi I'm Vicki and I have over 20 years’ experience as an Exercise Physiologist, Soft Tissue Therapist and Pilates instructor. I have been a remedial massage therapist for the Australian and AIS (Australian Institute of sports) working with elite athletes including the Australian rowing, swimming and basketball teams and provided soft tissue services to the Australian Rowing team at the 2004 Athens Games. I am also a Level 2 cycling coach and have experience as the Associate Cycling Coach with the ACT Academy of Sport, particularly focused on talent identification of road cyclists. Rounding out my experience I have also been an elite athlete, holding an AIS cycling scholarship in 2008 and then riding as a professional cyclist for the Vision 1 and Lotto Belisol teams in 2009-2011 and representing Australia at four consecutive UCI Road World Championships in both the Road Race and Time Trial disciplines as well as the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. My interest in bike fitting was first sparked by the bike fits and aerodynamic wind tunnel testing that I experienced as a professional athlete and have first hand experience of how important a good fit is to achieving performance and comfort on the bike. My qualifications and experience in Remedial Massage, Exercise Physiology and cycle coaching means that I am adept at assessing and and addressing injuries caused by a poor bicycle fit or due to movement patterns and daily activities that occur off the bike. Vicki also has qualifications specific to bike fitting, holding a bike fitting certification from F.I.S.T, the Fit Institute, SlowTwitch, which is run by Dan Empfield, the Publisher of Slowtwitch.com. At Winning Position, I aim to prescribe comfortable, injury free cycling positions that maximise performance. It is a process that involves addressing an individual’s biomechanics, the bike and the interaction between the two. I love helping cyclists from all disciplines whether they are looking to beat the world, ride around the block in comfort or anything in between. As a remedial massage therapist of 25 years I help people of all ages from all walks of life and have particular interest in individuals who like to be physically active and have goals for optimal health that is sustainable and maximises their health span- those years lived without chronic disease and conditions. I use a combination of hands-on/manual techniques such as trigger point therapy, myofascial release and PNF to address painful and dysfunctional soft tissue areas. As an adjunct I prescribe practical and do-able home strategies to get my clients back to moving and doing what they love.

Every Cyclist Has a Story One of the things I love most about my work is that people rarely arrive at my studio with just a bike problem. They come in because their knee hurts, their hands are numb, their back is complaining, or they want to get more comfortable and powerful on

🚴‍♀️ **Do your cycling shoes give your feet enough room?**

We spend a lot of time thinking about bikes, pedals, saddles and position… but what about the shoes our feet are sitting in for hours at a time?

As an exercise physiologist and bike fitter, I’m increasingly interested in how we can maintain **natural foot function while cycling**.

Our toes are designed to spread, move and help us balance and adapt. Yet many traditional cycling shoes—particularly road shoes—are quite narrow through the toe box.

And “wide” doesn’t always mean wide where it matters.

For me, a good cycling shoe should provide:

👣 **Space around the toes** so they aren't squeezed together
🦶 **Enough room for the foot to spread and swell** during longer rides
🔒 **A secure heel** so the foot isn't moving around inside the shoe
⚡ **Enough stiffness and stability** to transfer power effectively

I’m certainly not suggesting we need to cycle in barefoot shoes! Cycling has different demands, and we still need a secure connection to the pedal.

But perhaps we can have **both: stability AND foot freedom.**

Over the years, I’ve tried a number of cycling shoes and found that some brands are doing a much better job of accommodating the natural shape of the foot.

In my latest article, I take a look at some of the options I’ve found interesting, including **Lake, Bont, Leviathan and fi’zi:k Wide**.

If your toes feel squashed after a few hours on the bike, it might be worth looking at your shoes—not just your bike fit.

👣 **Your feet are part of the system too.**

👣 Could your cycling shoes be holding your feet back? 🚴‍♀️

We spend hours thinking about bike fit, saddle height, cleat position and power…
But what about the part of your body that connects you to the bike?
Your feet.

As an Exercise Physiologist, I’ve become increasingly passionate about natural foot health and giving our feet the freedom to move, feel and strengthen.

And when you’re cycling, your feet are locked into a shoe and connected to the pedal — repeating the same movement thousands of times.

So I think it’s worth asking:
👉 Is there enough room for your toes?
👉 Is your foot stable inside the shoe?
👉 Is your cleat positioned well?
👉 Are you doing anything off the bike to strengthen and mobilise your feet?
Before I ride, I like to spend a few minutes waking up my feet — moving my toes, mobilising and strengthening them.
Because sometimes improving your cycling isn’t just about changing something on the bike…
It starts with looking at your feet. 👣
