For Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, accessing medication is not the problem; being supported to use them safely is.

Last week, PSA President, Professor Mark Naunton MPS, spoke with the ABC about PSA's latest Medicine Safety series report, Medicine Safety: Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Community Care.

The eighth edition highlights the scale and nature of medicine safety issues faced by culturally and linguistically diverse Australians.

The PSA is committed to working with government, our members, and stakeholders to ensure people from culturally and linguistically diverse populations are supported to access medicines safely and effectively

What an incredible evening at Parliament House!

PSA was proud to host the inaugural Parliamentary Friends of Safe and Quality Use of Medicines event yesterday, with the Parliamentary Friends group co-chaired by Steve Georganas MP and Cameron Caldwell MP.

Medicine-related harm contributes to around 650,000 hospital and emergency department visits each year. Half of these are considered avoidable, costing the health system an estimated $2.1 billion annually. The need for action is clear.

Pharmacists are medicines experts, playing a critical role in preventing medicine-related harm and helping Australians get the best from their medicines.

With Quality Use of Medicines and Medicines Safety Australia’s 10th National Health Priority Area, we’re encouraged by the strong, non-partisan engagement from MPs and Senators and the opportunity to strengthen the national focus on the safe and quality use of medicines.
An exciting step forward for medicines safety in Australia.

In 2025, HPV vaccination coverage among boys fell to 75.6%, below the 90% coverage target for 2030.

With demand for convenient access to vaccination continuing to grow, pharmacists are well positioned to help close these gaps and increase HPV vaccination uptake.

The HPV Vaccination: Boosting Confidence and Uptake webinar will provide a practical refresher on HPV vaccination, with a focus on recognising catch-up vaccination opportunities and supporting patients who are at higher risk of HPV .

Register now for the webinar happening on 26 August at 7.00 pm AEST to strengthen your role in HPV prevention.

🎙️ In this episode of Your Pharmacy Career Podcast 🎙️
Host Krysti-Lee Patterson sits down with Emi Gosling - former community pharmacy proprietor, ex-TGA delegate, and founder of e-MAS Medicine Advertising Services - to explore the often misunderstood world of pharmacy advertising compliance.

💡 Her three rules of thumb for anyone posting about their services on social media:
• Education, advertising or content? Know the difference. Promoting healthcare products and services is regulated, and that includes content someone else created for you.
• Running a full-scope clinic? Promote the service, not the product. Talk about the consultation or the condition you're treating, not the medicine used to treat it.
• Launching something new? Understand what can actually be advertised. The rules for health claims differ across foods, cosmetics and therapeutic goods.

“Any media is advertising. A poster on your wall, a post on your page, the same rules apply to both.”

Emi also shares the career story behind the expertise: from community pharmacy ownership, to being made redundant when her TGA delegate role was legislated away, to building an independent consultancy from nothing.

If you post about your pharmacy on social media, even occasionally, this episode is worth your time.
