Somewhere, right now, someone is going about their day - working, driving, scrolling their phone - without realising their vision is slowly changing. No pain, no warning sign, just a slow drift they haven't noticed yet.

According to the World Health Organization, more than a billion people worldwide are living with vision loss that could have been prevented or addressed with the right care at the right time. Not because the answers didn't exist - but because the changes went unnoticed for too long.

That's the part that's easy to miss about eye health - so much of it happens quietly. You don't always feel it happening. You just wake up one day and realise something's different.

Today is World Sight Day, and it's a good reminder that your eyes deserve the same attention as the rest of your health - not just when something feels wrong, but as a regular check-in.

Consistent follow-up in AMD care isn't just recommended, this research shows it's what protects vision.

Dr Richard Barry is a contributing author on a newly published study using data from the Fight Retinal Blindness! registry — a real-world outcomes registry spanning multiple countries including Australia — examining what happens to AMD patients' vision when they miss 6 or more months of anti-VEGF treatment appointments.

The findings are clear. Vision dropped by an average of nearly 5 letters immediately after the treatment gap — and that loss largely didn't recover once appointments resumed. Eyes with active disease at the time of the gap fared worse. And about 1 in 4 AMD patients experienced a significant treatment gap within 6.5 years of starting therapy.

This is the kind of evidence that informs how we support our retina patients at Blink Eye Clinic — not just in the chair, but in staying connected to their care over the long term.

Swipe through for the key findings — and what they mean for AMD management in routine practice.

It was an honour to be a sponsor at the University of Canberra Optometry Society's Annual Eyeball.

Dr Richard Barry and Dr Neera Jain thoroughly enjoyed the evening, connecting with the next generation of optometrists here in Canberra. It's always a privilege to celebrate the students and future colleagues who will go on to shape eye care in our community.

Thank you for having us.

The retina team at Blink Eye Clinic is contributing to the research that is shaping how AMD is managed in routine clinical practice — not just in Australia, but around the world.

Dr Richard Barry is a contributing author on a newly published study examining what happens to vision in AMD patients who miss 6 or more months of their anti-VEGF injection appointments.

The findings are significant. Almost one in four patients treated for neovascular AMD experienced a 6 to 12-month gap in their appointments within 6.5 years of starting treatment. And when that gap occurred, vision dropped by an average of nearly 5 letters — almost one full line on an eye chart — immediately after. Crucially, that vision loss largely did not recover once treatment was resumed.

For patients managing AMD — and for the optometrists and GPs who support them — this research reinforces one critical message: consistent follow-up is not a formality. It is what protects vision.

At Blink Eye Clinic, our retina team builds long-term monitoring and adherence support into every patient's care from day one.

Referrals from optometrists and GPs are always welcome.

There's a moment cataract patients often describe, when things that had gradually become dull, blurry, or washed out suddenly become clear again.

The colours. The faces. The small details of daily life that had quietly faded without them fully realising.

Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed procedures in ophthalmology, and when the timing is right, the impact on everyday life can be profound. Not just clinically. Personally.

At Blink Eye Clinic, every cataract assessment starts with understanding you — what you love doing, and what quality of vision means for your life.

The face of someone you love. The words on a page. The view from the top of a mountain.

Everything you see, every detail, every colour, every moment worth looking at, passes through your retina first.

It's a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye, no bigger than a postage stamp. And it carries an extraordinary responsibility. When the retina is affected by disease, everything it makes possible is at risk.

Conditions like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and retinal detachment can all affect the retina, many of them without obvious early symptoms. Early specialist assessment and monitoring is what changes the picture.

At Blink Eye Clinic, Dr Richard Barry and Dr Joanne Teong provide dedicated specialist retina care for patients across the Canberra region. Two specialists. The latest diagnostic technology. A team that understands what's at stake.

Referrals are welcome from optometrists and GPs. And if you've noticed any changes in your vision, don't wait.

There's more than one path to clear vision

Our principal surgeon Dr Richard Barry spoke with Region Canberra about the range of options we assess for - LASIK, TransPRK, SmartSight, ICL and Refractive Lens Exchange - and why the right choice depends on the individual eye, not the trend.

Worth a read if laser eye surgery has ever crossed your mind.

There is more than one path to clear vision. Significant planning and expertise go into deciding the right approach for each person. Photo: Blink Vision Clinic.

If you're living with diabetes, this is worth knowing.

1 in 3 people with diabetes will develop diabetic eye disease at some point. And in its early stages — the stages where management options are broadest — there are no obvious symptoms. No pain. No noticeable change in vision. Nothing that tells you something is happening.

Diabetic retinopathy, the most common form of diabetic eye disease, occurs when elevated blood sugar damages the tiny vessels in the retina. It progresses quietly, which is exactly why waiting for symptoms before getting your eyes checked is not a reliable strategy.

Annual comprehensive eye examinations are recommended from the point of diabetes diagnosis. Not when something feels wrong. From the beginning.

If you or someone you love is managing diabetes and hasn't had a thorough eye check recently, this is the nudge.

Your eyes deserve the same attention as every other part of your health.
