The AMA Council of Doctors in Training (AMACDT) is the largest subdivision of the Federal Australian Medical Association, working with trainees around the country on issues that matter to you. Australia's future specialist doctors deserve the support they need to thrive.

The AMA's latest Specialist Trainee Experience Health Check provides important insights into the experiences of doctors undertaking specialist training across Australia, highlighting opportunities to strengthen trainee wellbeing, support, feedback processes and engagement in decision-making.

Strengthening the trainee experience is critical to building a sustainable specialist workforce and ensuring Australians continue to receive high-quality care.

We have welcomed Ahpra’s decision to allow medical graduates to defer payment of their registration fees until after they start work as interns.

This is a common-sense reform that eases financial pressure during an already demanding transition from student to doctor, without compromising patient safety and regulatory standards.

A small administrative shift that will make a real difference to the experience of Australia’s future medical workforce.

Doctors in training are telling us the cost of specialist training is a source of real financial stress and, in some cases, a barrier to progressing in their chosen field.

Today, we published principles for supporting financial sustainability of specialist medical trainees, which calls on specialist medical colleges to make fees more transparent, predictable and fair.

Developed by the AMA’s Council of Doctors in Training, the position statement supports constructive engagement with specialist medical colleges to find a balanced approach that recognises both trainee needs and system sustainability.
