The “window of tolerance,” a concept developed by psychiatrist Dr. Dan Siegel, describes the optimal emotional zone in which you can function, think, and process stress effectively. When operating within this window, you remain grounded, capable of self-reflection, and emotionally balanced.
Stress, trauma, or fatigue can push you outside of this zone into one of two states:
❗️Hyperarousal: The “fight-or-flight” state characterized by anxiety, racing thoughts, panic, or anger. The thinking brain goes offline, making rational thought difficult.
❕Hypoarousal: The “freeze” or collapse state characterized by emotional numbness, detachment, depression, or lack of energy.
Understanding this model allows you to identify where your nervous system is and apply specific grounding or self-soothing techniques to return to your regulated state. 🙏
