Can acupuncture and Chinese medicine support people with ADHD, autism, OCD? It is something I am asked about regularly in clinic, and I wanted to share a more detailed answer here for anyone who has been wondering.
This applies to children and adults equally. Whether you are a parent seeking support for your child, an adult who has recently received a diagnosis, or someone who has known about their neurodivergence for years and is looking for additional tools, Chinese medicine has a lot to offer.
Chinese medicine is not about changing who you are. Neurodivergence is not something that needs fixing. What we focus on is supporting the body and nervous system so that the everyday challenges that often accompany a neurodivergent brain become a little more manageable.
And those challenges are real. People come to me describing:
- A mind that is completely wired at bedtime but foggy and exhausted during the day
- Emotional responses that escalate quickly and are hard to recover from
- Chronic digestive issues, food sensitivities, or a difficult relationship with eating
- Anxiety that makes work, social situations, or everyday transitions extremely draining
- A body that seems to catch every illness and takes a long time to bounce back
- An inability to focus or follow through, no matter how hard they try
- That constant feeling of being overwhelmed, overstimulated, and running on empty
For parents, this might sound like their child. For adults, it might sound like themselves. Either way, these are exactly the areas where acupuncture and Chinese medicine can offer meaningful support.
HOW ACUPUNCTURE HELPS
At its core, acupuncture works by regulating the nervous system. Many neurodivergent individuals spend a significant amount of time in a state of heightened activation, what most people know as fight-or-flight. The nervous system is constantly on alert, making it very difficult to sleep, concentrate, digest food properly, or regulate emotions effectively. Acupuncture helps shift the body out of that state and into genuine rest and recovery.
With consistent treatment, here is what people often report:
SLEEP
One of the most common and impactful areas we work on. Whether it is difficulty falling asleep, frequent night waking, or a mind that simply will not switch off, acupuncture can help calm the nervous system and support more settled, restorative sleep. For adults this often means finally waking up feeling rested. For children it can transform the entire evening routine and the next day's behaviour.
EMOTIONAL REGULATION
When the nervous system baseline is chronically elevated, it takes very little to reach overwhelm. This might look like a child who melts down over something that seems small, or an adult who finds themselves snapping, shutting down, or feeling completely dysregulated after a full day of masking. Acupuncture works to bring that baseline down, creating more capacity before the threshold is reached.
FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION
A nervous system that is always in survival mode does not have the resources available for higher order thinking and learning. As sleep improves and the nervous system begins to regulate, focus and mental clarity often follow. For adults juggling work and life demands, this can be genuinely significant. For children it can make a real difference in the classroom.
DIGESTION AND GUT HEALTH
The connection between the gut and the brain is well established, and it is something Chinese medicine has recognised for thousands of years. Neurodivergent individuals often have sensitive digestive systems, whether that shows up as bloating, constipation, food aversions, or just a generally unsettled gut. Addressing this is always part of our approach, and improvements in digestion often have a notable flow-on effect to mood, energy, and overall wellbeing.
IMMUNITY AND RESILIENCE
Chronic stress takes a toll on the immune system. Whether it is a child who picks up every bug at school or an adult who never quite feels well, treatment aimed at building the body's overall strength and vitality can make a meaningful difference over time.
BURNOUT AND EXHAUSTION
This one is particularly relevant for adults, especially those who have spent years masking or pushing through without the right support. Autistic and ADHD burnout is real and can be profound. Chinese medicine is well placed to help rebuild depleted energy, support the adrenals, and restore a sense of steadiness.
WHAT IF NEEDLES ARE NOT AN OPTION?
This is a very common concern. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine and most people tolerate them far better than expected, but for those who are not ready, there are excellent alternatives. Paediatric Tui Na is a specialised form of Chinese medical massage that works on the same principles and is deeply settling for children. We always work at the pace of the individual.
Chinese herbal medicine is also a powerful complement to acupuncture and can be prescribed in forms that suit both children and adults.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The first appointment is primarily a conversation. I want to understand you or your child as a whole person: sleep, digestion, emotional patterns, energy levels, and what daily life actually looks like. From there we build an individualised plan.
If you would like to know more or have questions about whether this could be a good fit for you or your family, I warmly invite you to get in touch.
