Family History Month begins this Saturday, 1 August, with our Opening Ceremony and a fascinating presentation exploring the Greek migrant experience.

Diaspora: the Greek Migrant Experience

Did you know that the word diaspora is a Greek word meaning 'dispersion'?

Following the Second World War, more than 350,000 Greek migrants made Australia their new home in search of new opportunities and a better future. Join us as we explore migrant selection documents, arrival records and alien registration papers from the National Archives that document the Greek migrant experience.

We're delighted that this year's opening presentation will be delivered by Eve Terry, Manager of Public Engagement for the National Archives of Australia, Queensland. As a second-generation Greek Australian, Eve's own family story has inspired her passion for helping people connect with their heritage through Australian Government records, making this a presentation with both professional expertise and personal insight.

𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱’𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀

Christina Stead (1902 – 1983), childhood resident of Lydham Hall, was one of Australia’s most significant novelists, and her Sydney upbringing informed her internationally acclaimed fiction. Novels such as 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘯 𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯 (1940) and 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘈𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦 (1944) combined bold narrative experimentation with unflinching social commentary in works that were defining for Australian literary modernism.

Currently, Christina’s manuscript and typescript drafts of prose; notes, background material and jottings relating to her literary output; correspondence and book reviews can only be accessed in person at the National Library in Canberra.

The St George Historical Society has proudly donated $1,000 to the 2026 Appeal to digitise these records and those of over twenty other Australian women writers. Many of these women were not just creative innovators, but also extraordinary advocates for change.

📊 Ryerson Index Update!

Since our last update on 14 June, our incredible volunteers have uploaded 18,247 new notices to the Ryerson Index website.

We're also pleased to have added another funeral director to our growing collection, making even more notices available for researchers and families.

We'd love to keep expanding our coverage, but to do that we need more volunteer indexers.
