A major 2026 review pulled together decades of exercise research, and the takeaway is hard to ignore: physical activity eases symptoms of depression and anxiety across every age group studied. Aerobic movement, the kind that gets your heart working, showed the most consistent benefit.

Your spine and your mood are more connected than you may realize. When we help restore movement and reduce pain, we’re also removing one of the biggest barriers to staying active. Patients managing chronic discomfort often find it hard to exercise at all, and that can quietly affect mental wellbeing too.

You don’t need an intense routine to benefit. Even short, regular sessions of walking, cycling, or gentle movement can support both your spine and your state of mind.

If you’ve been told that neck pain or arm pain from a pinched nerve might require surgery, you’re not alone in feeling uncertain about that path. A major 2026 systematic review of more than 1,100 patients found no significant long-term differences between surgery and conservative care for neck pain, arm pain, disability, or overall treatment success.

This is an important finding, proving that for many people, the outcomes from non-surgical care are comparable to surgical outcomes – without the recovery time, risk, or cost. Conservative care works, and the evidence is continuing to build in its favor.

If you’re managing ongoing neck and arm pain, I encourage you to explore all your options before committing to an invasive procedure.

Spinal work has been proven to produce measurable changes in brain activity, including in regions that process pain, mood, and awareness.

Researchers found that these brain-level shifts were tied not only to reduced pain, but also better physical function and more stable emotional states. The prefrontal cortex (which is involved in decision-making and emotional regulation) was among the areas most noticeably affected.

This doesn’t mean Bowen is a treatment for mental health conditions, but it does show that body alignment has further reaching outcomes than you may think. I'm strengthening your nervous system in ways science is only beginning to fully map.

Most of us know we should move more, and we often picture that as something structured, requiring equipment or a gym. But a major randomized controlled trial found that a simple walking program of around 130 minutes per week nearly doubled the time people remained free of low back pain compared to those who did nothing.

What makes this finding so useful isn’t just the numbers. It’s the message: your spine responds well to regular, low-impact movement. Walking keeps spinal structures hydrated, supports the muscles that stabilize your back, and improves overall circulation to the tissues that matter most.

The best part is that you don’t need a special program or a new fitness routine to benefit — just consistency.

Spinal discs don’t last forever, but you can help your spine stay healthier, longer. Some degree of disc degeneration happens to nearly everyone as the years pass; by age 60, most adults show at least minor changes on imaging.

Many people with significant disc changes live actively and comfortably, while others with modest degeneration experience considerable discomfort. The difference often comes down to how well the surrounding structures (muscles, ligaments, and joints) are functioning.

Regular movement, maintaining a healthy weight, and good spinal alignment all play a role in how quickly or slowly degeneration progresses. Bowen fits directly into this picture by supporting spinal function, reducing compensatory stress on nearby joints, and keeping you moving well.

You can’t stop the clock, but you can influence how your spine ages. I'm here to help you do exactly that.

Most people come to me for pain relief, but one of the most common things my clients tell me after starting care is that they’re sleeping better. This isn’t a coincidence. Research using brain-wave monitoring shows that Bowen produces measurable changes in the nervous system, including a shift away from the stress-driven patterns that keep the body wound up at night.

When the spine is misaligned, nerve communication becomes less efficient. The body compensates, but that compensation comes at a cost – including disrupted sleep.

Bowen helps restore normal signaling, which supports the body’s ability to move from alert to relaxed when it’s time to rest.

Sleep is when your body repairs tissue, regulates hormones, and consolidates the benefits of care. If you’ve noticed changes in how you sleep since starting bowen treatments, that’s your nervous system responding.

The body works best when all its systems are connected and communicating well. That philosophy fits naturally into what modern medicine is increasingly calling “whole-person health.”

Whole-person care considers more than symptoms. It looks at how movement, stress, sleep, and lifestyle all influence how you feel. When your spine moves well, your nervous system functions more efficiently. When your nervous system functions better, it can positively affect everything from energy levels to how your body handles stress.

This is why many patients notice improvements beyond just the pain or tension that first brought them in. Better sleep. Clearer head. More ease in daily movement. These aren’t coincidences… they reflect how deeply connected your spine and overall well-being really are.

When you’re under pressure, your shoulders often round forward. Your head drifts slightly ahead of your body. Breathing becomes shallower. Muscles around the neck and upper back tighten without you even realizing it.

The problem? When stress becomes ongoing, that protective posture can stick.

Over time, forward head position and rounded shoulders can strain the muscles that support your spine. Joints don’t move as smoothly. You may notice tension headaches, upper back stiffness, or that constant “tight” feeling between your shoulder blades. Your spine and nervous system are closely connected. When your body stays in a guarded posture, it can reinforce that stressed, on-alert feeling.

Improving spinal mobility and awareness can help your body shift out of that braced position. Try Bowen to help release the brace
