Imagine slowly losing the ability to do the everyday things most of us take for granted.

For Aya, a high school teacher from Jerusalem, a cornea disease called keratoconus gradually stole her independence. She stopped driving, struggled to teach, endured constant pain and even needed help navigating everyday life.

Everything changed when she came to the Hadassah Medical Organization, where Dr. David Smadja and his team performed an innovative procedure using donor tissue to restore her vision.

Today, Aya - now 38 - is back to teaching, driving and living a full life.

“I got my independence back.”

Her story is a powerful reminder that groundbreaking medicine doesn’t just restore sight — it restores lives.

Sixteen women and girls from a beauty salon in East Jerusalem’s A-Tur neighbourhood were recently rushed to Hadassah with carbon monoxide poisoning and treated in the hospital’s hyperbaric chamber, the only facility of its kind in the Jerusalem region.

In emergencies like this, hyperbaric oxygen therapy plays a critical role by delivering high-pressure oxygen that helps remove carbon monoxide from the blood and restore oxygen flow to the body.

Prof. Yoram Weiss, Director General of Hadassah Medical Organization, shares the update on the patients and Hadassah’s emergency response, noting that the patients are in moderate condition and crediting the rapid work of ambulance crews and Hadassah teams in helping prevent serious neurological damage.

When every minute mattered, Hadassah’s expertise, technology, and readiness helped turn a dangerous emergency into a story of hope and lifesaving care.

Swift action saved a young father from Israel’s deadliest snake.
After a day of trekking in the desert, 38-year-old Moshe Koblenz returned home and was bitten by an Israeli mole viper — a rare and dangerous snake with no available anti-venom.

As Moshe’s condition rapidly worsened, Hadassah Ein Kerem’s emergency and cardiology teams moved quickly. Dr. Wasseem Mujahed recognised the signs, Dr. Roy Kofman was ready when the ambulance arrived, and together with Prof. Kobi Assaf, the team confirmed the diagnosis and began urgent treatment to protect Moshe’s heart.

Within hours, Moshe’s condition began to improve, and he was soon out of danger.

Now home with his wife and young daughter, Moshe is reminding others of one lifesaving lesson: in a medical emergency, act fast.

A frightening accident became a story of expert care at Hadassah Ein Kerem.

A one-year-old toddler from Beit Shemesh was rushed to the Trauma Unit at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem after a metal skewer became embedded in her head following a fall at home.

Despite the alarming injury, the toddler remained fully conscious. At Hadassah, she was immediately evaluated by the paediatric emergency team and neurosurgeons, who performed imaging tests and confirmed that the skewer had not penetrated the skull.

Thanks to the careful assessment and quick response of Hadassah’s medical teams, surgery was not needed. The object was safely removed, the wound was cleaned and sutured, and the toddler was transferred for observation.

Dr. Lea Sarna Cahan, paediatric emergency medicine specialist, emphasised an important message: when a sharp object or foreign body is embedded in the body, it should never be removed at home. Medical care should be sought immediately.

Senior neurosurgeon Dr. Andrés Vargas shared that the toddler was extremely fortunate, as the injury was superficial and caused no significant damage.

The toddler is expected to return home soon and make a full recovery — another powerful reminder of the lifesaving expertise and compassionate care provided every day at Hadassah.
