For some people, headaches and jaw symptoms can be more closely connected than they realise.
Clenching, increased muscle activity and overloading of the jaw can contribute to pain in the jaw and surrounding structures. In some presentations, these structures may also contribute to aspects of a person's headache.
That doesn't mean every headache comes from the jaw.
But if you're experiencing persistent headaches, particularly alongside:
• Jaw pain or tightness
• Clenching or grinding
• Facial pain
• Temple pain
• Morning jaw symptoms
…it may be worth considering whether the jaw is one piece of the puzzle.
At Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre, we take a broader approach to assessment, looking at the jaw alongside the neck, muscles, sleep, breathing and other contributing factors.
If your headaches aren't improving, perhaps it's time to look beyond the headache itself.
