On Saturday night I had the privilege of attending one of Joshua Batten’s live gigs. Joshua is a professional musician whose lyrics draw on his personal experiences being autistic. This song named ‘Melody’ is about his relationship with the love of his life, his music, seeing as he finds other relationships challenging. I encourage other allied health professionals to explore his lyrics and his professional success with their clients, as well as to support his music.

Today in Liz’s social interaction group with 9 year olds, she worked on communication, listening to each other and working collaboratively together. Did you know at Spark Speech Pathology we run several weekly social interaction groups to work on a variety of areas such as: friendship skills, working cooperatively, listening and sharing ideas and many others in a fun and engaging way. In last week’s social skills group, participants tapped into childhood classics with Beyblades. They built, tested and reworked ideas together. From problem-solving which pieces fit best to navigating the fine line between friendly banter and respectful communication, every spin sparked connection. During a social interaction group last week our group played Don’t Wake Dad while building important social skills along the way.
Through the game, we practised teamwork, collaboration, flexible thinking, and respectful communication.
The group did a fantastic job negotiating rules, taking turns, assigning roles (like being in charge of the rules), and advocating for themselves when needed.
Learning through play is always a win.
