21–27 September | National Week of Deaf People 💙

This week is an opportunity to celebrate Deaf community, language, culture and history - and to think about what communication accessibility looks like for children and families.

One important thing to remember: sign languages are real languages. Auslan (Australian Sign Language) has its own grammar and linguistic structure and is an important part of Deaf life and culture in Australia.

Communication access can look different for every person. It might include Auslan, captions, visual information, written communication, hearing technology or other forms of support.

At Newcastle Hearing Centre for Children, we believe every child and family deserves to be listened to and supported in the way that works best for them.

This week, rather than speaking for Deaf people, we're encouraging our community to listen to Deaf-led voices, learn from lived experience and consider how we can make communication more accessible.

Speech Pathology Week (23–29 August) is a great reminder that hearing plays a vital role in a child's speech and language development.

Many parents are surprised to learn that:
✔️ A child can pass their newborn hearing screen and still develop hearing loss later
✔️ Ongoing ear infections and glue ear can affect the sounds children hear
✔️ Even temporary hearing changes can impact speech and language development

If your child isn't meeting speech milestones, their speech has stalled or become harder to understand, or they've had frequent ear infections, a hearing assessment is an important first step.

Our specialist paediatric audiologists work closely with speech pathologists, GPs and paediatricians to help ensure children have the best foundation for communication.

Children with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) often have normal hearing test results, but may find it difficult to:
• Follow conversations in noisy places
• Remember spoken instructions
• Process information quickly
• Keep up in the classroom

Because these signs can overlap with other learning, language or attention difficulties, APD is often misunderstood. A comprehensive assessment can help identify where the difficulties lie and provide practical strategies to support your child at home and at school.

Auditory Processing Disorder, or APD, can affect the way the brain processes sounds, especially in noisy or busy environments like classrooms.

Children with auditory processing difficulties may:

• Struggle to follow instructions
• Frequently ask for things to be repeated
• Find background noise overwhelming
• Mishear words or conversations
• Have difficulty concentrating in class
• Seem “not to listen”, even when their hearing is normal

We’re excited to now offer Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) assessments at Newcastle Hearing Centre for Children.

APD affects how the brain processes sound, rather than how well the ears hear. Children with APD often have normal hearing but may struggle to understand speech, especially in noisy environments like classrooms.

An assessment may be helpful if your child:

Frequently asks for repetition or says “what?” often
Has difficulty following instructions
Struggles with listening in noise
Finds it hard to focus or seems easily distracted
Has challenges with reading, spelling, or language development
