Newcastle Hearing Centre for Children now offers APD testing!

Does your child seem to hear, but not always understand?

Auditory Processing Disorder, or APD, can affect the way the brain processes sounds, especially in noisy or busy environments like classrooms.

Children with auditory processing difficulties may:

• Struggle to follow instructions
• Frequently ask for things to be repeated
• Find background noise overwhelming
• Mishear words or conversations
• Have difficulty concentrating in class
• Seem “not to listen”, even when their hearing is normal

At NHC, we offer Auditory Processing Disorder testing for children, helping families better understand how their child processes spoken information.

Assessment can provide valuable information for parents, teachers and treating professionals, and may help guide practical supports at home and school.

For more information or to book an appointment, contact Newcastle Hearing Centre for Children.

Flynn was born with a life-threatening airway blockage and underwent an emergency tracheostomy at birth. After years of treatment, surgeries, and incredible resilience, his tracheostomy tube has finally been removed at John Hunter Hospital. Flynn’s journey is a powerful reminder of the strength of children, families, and the multidisciplinary teams who care for them. Well done Flynn we are so proud of you!

'I just think he was put on this Earth for a reason.'

It was a pleasure having Sienna from Merewether High School complete her work experience with us this week.

Sienna spent time learning about the day-to-day operations of our specialist centre and gaining insight into healthcare and patient care alongside our team. We hope the experience gave her a valuable look into the medical field and what goes on behind the scenes in a busy specialist practice.

Thank you to Dr Jefferson for helping mentor and support Sienna throughout the week. We wish Sienna all the very best with her future studies and career journey.

APD testing is now available at Newcastle Hearing Centre for Children in Charlestown for children ages 6 and up!

We’re excited to now offer Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) assessments at Newcastle Hearing Centre for Children.

APD affects how the brain processes sound, rather than how well the ears hear. Children with APD often have normal hearing but may struggle to understand speech, especially in noisy environments like classrooms.

An assessment may be helpful if your child:

Frequently asks for repetition or says “what?” often
Has difficulty following instructions
Struggles with listening in noise
Finds it hard to focus or seems easily distracted
Has challenges with reading, spelling, or language development

Our specialised testing helps identify these difficulties and provides clear guidance for support at school and home.

Last night we were delighted to host our information evening on Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) in a collaborative ENT and Speech Pathology setting.
It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout of clinicians and to share discussion around multidisciplinary assessment, patient pathways and clinical collaboration. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to such an engaging and thoughtful evening.
We look forward to continuing to build strong professional partnerships in our community.

This beautiful woman felt she looked tired all the time, and wanted a subtle refresh. She underwent a browlift and SMAS facelift. The individual technique should always be balanced with the patient’s goals and anatomy. SMAS-lifts, midface lifts, deep-plane facelifts all have their roles and their place; our surgical plan rested on the SMAS lift. She’s shown 6 months postoperatively, and we’re all thrilled with the results.
